Etching Souvenir Wine Glasses

Just popping in with a quick update today. Remember how I mentioned when Matt and I got back from our winery trip that I wanted to etch the date of our visit onto the souvenir glasses we brought home? Well, I did it, and it was super easy!

As was suggested in this Make It and Love It tutorial that I found on Pinterest, I picked up some Armour Etch glass etching cream from Michael’s. (I used a 40% off coupon from here, which brought the price of the 3 oz. bottle down to about eight bucks.) I designed and printed a template with the numbers of our date, and then cut them out of adhesive stencil film that I had leftover from my canister makeover project. After firmly and carefully pressing stencils onto our four glasses, I smeared a thick layer of etching cream over each one using a Q-tip.

The instructions on the bottle said to leave the cream on for just 60 seconds, but the tutorial suggested about 10 minutes. I averaged the two and went with about five minutes before rinsing thoroughly. I’m really happy with how they turned out! The dates around the bottoms of the glasses are more subtle than the winery logos on the tops, which I think is nice, but if you want a bolder look, I’d go for the full 10 minutes.

I barely used any of the etching cream, so I have plenty leftover for dating glasses from future winery trips. I might also try etching monograms onto wine glasses for wedding or anniversary gifts.

Have you ever etched glass before? Isn’t it crazy how easy it is?
