"As a person with hearing loss, I often find lectures, plays, and PA system announcements indecipherable. But who else notices? Unlike someone visibly left outside because of wheelchair inaccessibility - which would leave others appalled - inaccessibility due to hearing loss is invisible and thus often unremedied."
- David Myers, author and a professor of psychology at Hope College
First, unpack the product from the box. You will have the amplifier unit, an AC cord, patch cords for the TV and either loop wire or a loop pad. You will need to run the wire around the TV room either along the baseboard, or in the crawl space under the room, or in the unfinished basement area under the TV room. It can also be run around the ceiling if the ceiling height is 8-10’. DO NOT PUT THE WIRE AT OR NEAR EAR HEIGHT. Optimal distance from ear height is 3'-4' which is why the floor or ceiling is best. The loop signal goes both up and down so if you put it on the floor, the sound will also carry through the floor to the TV room above or below. The wire can be stapled or you can buy little plastic hangers. Bring the two ends of the loop together and plug each one into the wire terminals at the back of the loop amplifier.
If you have the loop pad, simply put it under your chair cushion or under the chair, plug in the cord (or wire for the Microloop) in the back of the loop amplifier. The pad may also be set at the back of the chair, depending on the orientation of your t-coil.
Next, plug the RCA audio patch cords in to the back of the loop amplifier and plug the other end into the AUDIO OUT jacks on the TV (red and white). You may also plug the amplifier into the back of a DVD player or cable/satellite box, although you may need a Y adapter available at Radio Shack if those AUDIO OUT jacks are already in use. Some of the newer TVs do not have AUDIO OUT jacks but have digital optical jacks. You will then need to purchase a digital to audio converter. Gefen is the brand we recommend.
Remember, you must have your t-coils turned on. Some hearing aids have t-coils which are not activated. Audiologists often set the t-coils very low in the beginning, so you may need to visit your audiologist to have the t-coils adjusted and/or activated. Some people only have a t-coil in one hearing aid and you can typically have one installed for $100-300 by your audiologist. Automatic t-coils (auto coils) are not triggered by the loop so it is important to have manual control of the t-coil.
Now you are ready to turn on your room loop and enjoy! Simply turn on the unit, adjust the volume for your pleasure, sit back and hear the TV CLEARLY!
These instructions work with the Univox DLS-50 or the new Microloop III. Please contact Assist 2 Hear if you have questions.
