Crash Moreau was the first stuntman from Maine to perform the Human Bomb Coffin of Death in the mid 70's. His first explosion was at Unity's Raceway for Bob Knowles and later at Beech Ridge Speedway in Scarboro, Maine. These pictures was taken at Beech Ridge Speedway at the time under new owner Cal Reynolds.
As the wood flies from the blast of over a pound of explosives that was placed inside of the wooden coffin. Crash Moreau, aka as Captain Explosion was in the middle of the blast.
The Captain was literally knocked out by the explosion. Here he is in the bottom three pictures being revived by the emergency crew at Beech Ridge Speedway, and finally getting a helping hand to get up and wave to the spectators.
Captain Explosions Dynamite car is where stuntman Jim Moreau will step inside of a stock automobile that has been set up with at at least 4 charges of explosives placed in or around the car. After settling down inside of the car he will literaly blow the car up into a ball of fire. As the car is engulfed in flames, the Captain will step out of the car and now will perform the Human Torch stunt of being on fire. He will than run down the track to his safety crew to put him out. Jim uses no special fire suits or gels like the Hollywood Stunt Performers do, only a few layers of water soaked clothing.
Originally this act was first performed by Benny "The Bomb" Koskie who did the act without being on fire. Later Dave Rigby and Frank Parks both did this act also not on fire. The first person to do the dynamite car to come out on fire on a regulated schedule was Gary Beall of Texas. Jim was the second stuntman to perfect this act and has done this act over 500 times without getting serious burnt.
Jim has been copied by many other want-a-bee stuntmen, but so far they do not come up to Jim's firery blast while performing this act.
From (top to bottom) The Dynamite car exploding, the ball of fire drops down and Captain Explosion immerges from the flaming automobile engulfed in flames on his human torch fire walk. This set of pictures is a fellow stuntman, Hardcore Rocky Hauri, who performed this stunt for Jim at Thunder Cross Speedway.
When Jim performs this act or when he sets up another stuntman to perform the act for him when he is present, Jim calls it "CAPTAIN EXPLOSION" which is a copyrighted trademark name. At no other time can anyone other than Jim use the name of "CAPTAIN EXPLOSION" in any type of thrill and stunt shows thru out the world.
The Dooms Day Chair is a cardboard and tin foil structor that resembles a chair which Jim kneels inside of. While performing this stunt you will see his head at all times when he is in the chair. Inside of the chair is an explosive charge of at least a pound of explosives that will be detonated about 18 inches from his head.
Known as Captain Explosion when ever he performs an explosive stunt, Jim is one of only a hand full of professional stunt performers in the country that has the knowledge of how to do this act. Jim also is one of only a few who can do this act using real dynamite. In over a 1,000 blast while performing this stunt he has never been injured. He first started doing this in 1980 for Big John Anderson. The original name of this act was The Russian Death Chair and has been around since the early 50's. The picture on the left is Captain Explosion kneeling in the chair.
The Captain is in the Dooms Dy Chair in the picture on the upper left. At the is the chair exploding. The left picture you can barely see the Captain being blown away from the explosion in a cloud of smoke from the explosives he uses.
The Coffin Of Death is where Captain Explosion, stuntman Jim Moreau, will place at least a pound of explosives inside of a box made out of styrofoam and placed about 18 inches from his head when he is inside of the Coffin. After Jim gets into the Coffin he will set the explosive charge. The explosion will literally blow apart the box and Jim will be blown away from where he had been lying and knocked unconsious from the explosion taking away the air that was around the blast area.
Jim has performed this act over 500 times in his career that started in 1972 with a blast of one kind or another. He has only been injured one time at the old JFK Stadium in Phillie back in the late 70's.
Jim is one of only a handfull of stuntmen that can perform this act. He can also do this act in 3 different ways using different explosive material.
THIS IS A CUT THAT CRASH MOREAU HAS USED SINCE THE LATE 70'S WHEN HE DOES HIS HUMAN BOMB ACT.
