Contraction Timer & Early Labor Tips

Movement during labor will aid in cervical dilation, especially in the early phase. Movement helps bring your little one into the most advantageous position for their journey through the pelvis.

Walking, slow-dancing, standing and kneeling are some good positions. Birth balls also work well. Go to the labor positions page for more positions.

As labor progresses, contractions will get stronger, last longer and come closer together.

Activities between contractions are a good idea. Here are some suggestions:
  • Check the bags you've packed for the hospitalput in all of your last minute items, toiletries, snacks, etc...
  • Take a walkfavor upright positions
  • Cook a meal to come home to
  • Write a letter to your baby
  • Laugh, dance, and be in the moment
  • Work on your photo album
  • Knit or crochet
  • Check your e-mail or Facebook
The idea is not sit around and wait or brace yourself for the next contraction. Physical activity lends itself to being relaxed. It also provides distraction.

Labor Coaches

Once your partner gets past the "excitement or shock" of her labor starting, she should start and end each contraction with a deep cleansing breath. This helps oxygenate mommy and baby and it will help her relax and focus. Oxygen also helps dilation and cervical relaxation.

Continue with nice deep abdominal breathing:
in 2, 3, 4... out 2, 3, 4...

Remember to "love her up"... Tell her what a great job she is doing.
When a woman feels loved, she feels safe, when she feels safe she can relax. The more relaxed she is the more comfortable she will be in labor. The energy conserved will help the uterus do a more efficient job.

Helping mommy stress less:
  • Keep her hydrated
  • Create an atmosphere conducive to helping mom relax
  • Continue with deep, slow abdominal breathing
  • Back rubs and foot massages
  • Emotional reassurance

This is an emotional and physical process for you as well. Remember to take care of yourself throughout; stay hydrated, and nourished.

The best of luck to you on your beautiful journey.
YOU ARE AWESOME!
