Royal Weddings: How we do it in Asia

The world will be watching when Prince William and Kate Middleton marry this week in London. How are royal weddings conducted in Asia?

It’s being described as the biggest show on Earth.

More than two billion people around the world are expected to tune in this Friday, 29 April, to watch the live coverage of the wedding of Britain’s Prince William to Kate Middleton. That’s nearly a third of the global population.

Royal weddings in other countries may not generate quite so much interest beyond their shores but often they are just as elaborate - and expensive – as in Britain.

We take a look at how royal weddings are conducted in some Asian countries:

- Japan and Thailand, where the monarchs are still revered by many people

- Brunei, where the Sultan is one of the richest men in the world

- India, where ordinary (but well-heeled) people can buy ‘royal wedding’ packages and get married in the tradition of the maharajas.
