HEADS + GRIDS

Long Island City couple Beth Williams and William Garrett come to the Ten10 Studios with new works May 13th through May 16th as part of the 2011 LIC Open Arts Week – Opening Reception May 13th 6pm to 9pm

Beth Williams, design director for footwear at Totes-Isotoner and William Garrett, record producer and recording studio owner, have always had one thing in common: art.

Moving to Long Island City over 20 years ago, they have watched the years past quickly, producing three lovely daughters and a deep love for the neighborhood, as evidenced by their ongoing community involvement.

On Friday May 13, they bring their love for creating to TEN10 Studios in LIC as part of the LIC Arts Open, May 14th through 21st. An opening reception will be held Friday May 13th from 6pm to 9pm.

“The Garretts take a very active role in our community. The have worked hard on many LIC issues over the years, from improving local schools to preserving quality of life. We look forward to seeing their artistic vision as part of the LIC Arts Open festival,” said Long Island City’s Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer.

Ms. Williams (aka Mrs. Garrett) has a BFA in painting from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design. Her paintings have been shown in galleries in New York NY, Providence RI, Hartford CT and Miami FLA.

Her footwear design career started at Nine West and led to designing for Enzo, AK Anne Klein, Circa Joan & David, Jones New York and Anne Taylor.

Ms. Williams’s new sculptures are large heads made from plastic shopping bags, plastic detergent containers and milk cartons. “These new heads evolved out of a desire to work 3-dimensionally, combined with wanting to use the recyclable materials we collect every week. I wanted to produce a calming presence from what we consider trash”, states the artist.

Mr. Garrett (aka Mr. Williams) has been making records since 1980. Having worked with everyone from New Kids on the Block to Norah Jones to Slayer to Conor Oberst, Garrett opened Electracraft Music Works in 2006. The studio has produced multiple Grammy wins and nominations as well as many #1 and top ten songs.

Photography has long run a close second to music in his life, continually documenting in photos recording sessions, mountain climbing expeditions, travels in an antique French car and the continuing journey of his three daughters.

He returns to fine art photography with grids of photos mounted on galvanized steel, creating new stories and “mash ups” of found signs and objects. A native of North Carolina, Mr. Garrett sees his new work as a “reinterpretation of the old metal and hand painted signs that are scattered throughout the South on tobacco barns and feed lots”. Photo subjects are found on long NYC walks and trips back down South. “Grids create an interaction between single photographs that tell a deeper story and, when mounted with magnets on steel, they are much easier to hang straight….”

The show runs May 13th through May 16tth, 2011 at Jesse Winter’s TEN10 Studios, 10-10 47th Road, Long Island City, NY 11101.

Opening Reception Friday May 13 6pm to 9pm.
