Our Grade School participated in a drive for collecting lei for Memorial Day, a contribution to the "Sew a Lei for Memorial Day at Honolulu Hale," program hosted by the City and County of Honolulu to honor our veterans on Memorial Day. Every year, more than 50,000 fresh flower lei are needed to be placed on each veteran's grave marker at Punchbowl and other cemeteries on Oahu for Memorial Day ceremonies honoring our fallen heroes. Our Student Council President and Vice President collected hundreds of lei donated by parents and students on Friday, May 25th. The lei will be delivered to county officials for use in the Memorial Day ceremonies. Every year, our 8th graders spend time learning all about the Civil War. To bring their studies to life, our outstanding teachers coordinate a field trip to Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden, where the students actually learn how to march in formation, just as the Union and Confederate soldiers did. To help our students gain a more in-depth perspective of life and times during the Civil War, volunteers from the Hawaii Civil War Roundtable Group join the students, dressed in historic Union and Confederate attire.

After visiting learning stations about field medicine, camp life and artillery launching (with water balloons!), the field trip culminated in a reenactment of the Battle of Gettysburg in a lush, green field nestled in the back of Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden. Baccalaureate Mass is at the St. Pius X Church in Manoa, on Thursday, May 31, 2012. Service begins at 9:00 a.m. The church will open to guests at 8:15 a.m.

Wednesday, May 16th was “Back to the Future Day” at Maryknoll Grade School! “Back to the Future” is a PTG-sponsored event where students who have been studying at Maryknoll for 12+ years are asked to return to the grade school, in particular-the Kindergarten classes, and spend time with the kindergarteners doing various activities and sharing their experiences about attending Maryknoll School from grade school through senior year of high school and the road to graduation.  It is a great way for our older students to give back to the Maryknoll School community.  Mahalo to our PTG for organizing a great day and thank you to the seniors who participated in the Back to the Future event and acted as mentors to our kindergartners!

Dear Maryknoll Parents,

The season of Lent offers us many important points of reflection on our lives: prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and reconciliation. Each of these is a discipline that not only enhances our well-being, but our families and community.

We believe parents are the primary faith models and disciplinarians for their children. Disciplining Children With LOVE is a parent workshop designed to assist parents with identifying disciplinary techniques that are effective in addressing behavioral issues while also displaying unconditional love to children. This workshop will discuss issues such as: Stages of Moral Development, Discipline or Punishment, Tips and Roadblocks to Effective Discipline, Effective Consequences, Forms of Parenting, and the Five Languages of Love of Children.

Our guest speaker Ms. Lianne Casupang, a current Maryknoll parent, is a licensed mental health counselor for the State of Hawai`i. She is a Family Advocacy Specialist for the United States Coast Guard where she assesses abusive situations and provides treatment for offenders and victims of domestic abuse. Ms. Casupang also provides classes for service members and civilians in assisting them to improve and maintain their family relationships. Prior to working for the Coast Guard, she was a clinical counselor with the United States Navy as well as the Hawai`i Youth Correctional Facility. She also taught and counseled at Saint Louis School.

Maryknoll School and Catholic Charities Hawaii, both of which were founded by the Maryknoll Sisters, have created an exciting opportunity to honor the Sisters through a year-long drive to provide assistance to families in need on Oahu.

For 100 years, the Maryknoll Sisters have reached out to the world to meet fundamental human needs through their mission of crossing borders to make God’s love visible. Maryknoll School and Catholic Charities Hawaii seek to embody the spirit of their mission by helping those less fortunate within our community. It is a momentous year for the Maryknoll Sisters as well as Catholic Charities Hawaii, who celebrates their 65^th anniversary this year, and Maryknoll School, who is celebrating their 85^th.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to partner with Maryknoll School in this year-long venture.
