Introduction
The ever increasing world wide competition between automotive manufacturers has resulted in a demand for attractive
products of ever higher quality within shorter product lead times. As a result of this is that manufacturers must introduce optimal
product delivery processes. This advancing sophistication of automobiles coupled with stringent environmental requirements
has increased the need for more and more complex tests and testing equipment.
Today, almost all test and measurement tasks in the automotive and aerospace industry use complex computer based tools.
However, the situation in this area is characterised by a large number of individual, incompatible solutions. They make it difficult
to exchange data, interconnect components, and operate different systems together. Furthermore, considerable effort and
expenses go into the upkeep, interfacing and adaptation of these proprietary or custom made systems.
Some car manufacturers realised that the best way to overcome the present situation was to standardise interfaces. In order to
have a widely accepted and lasting standard, test equipment users and vendors cooperate closely.
