Welcome to the 2012 Honors Program!
Thank you for your interest in nominating an organization (including your own) for consideration as a Computerworld Honors Laureate.

Nominations will be accepted through January 27, 2012. Laureates will be announced in the spring and recognized publicly at the Laureate Medal Ceremony and Awards Gala at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C. on June 4, 2012. During this black-tie ceremony, honorees are presented with a medallion inscribed with the Program's mission, "A Search for New Heroes." Additional recognition is given to five Laureates in each category who, selected by Honors Program Judges to represent outstanding innovation, become Finalists for the 21st Century Achievement Awards. One Finalist in each category is then named a 21st Century Achievement award winner, receiving special recognition by the Program Judges as the very best among their peers.

The evening black tie gala and ceremony is moderated by Computerworld's Executive Editor of Events, Julia King, and includes a cocktail reception and an elegant dinner. You can find more information about the awards evening here.


Program History and Nomination Criteria
For 23 years, the Computerworld Honors Program has recognized organizations that use information technology to promote and advance the public welfare, benefit society and change the world for the better. Additional criteria for a Computerworld Honors technology project include the following:
  • Provides a significant benefit to society in one of the 10 outlined categories.
  • Addresses a social or humanitarian need, either alleviating or resolving it.
  • Is currently in use, and demonstrating measurable results for its target beneficiaries.
  • Develops a new technology, or takes an existing technology and applies it in novel way, to meet a specific social or humanitarian need.
    • In addition:
  • Projects nominated must have been completed or significantly expanded in the past two years (since October 2009) to qualify.
  • Nominations must fit at least one of the award categories described below. Note that Computerworld editors reserve the right to shift your project to another category, if suitable.
  • Anyone within or outside an organization may nominate a project for the program.
  • As always, international entries are enthusiastically encouraged.
Awards Categories for 2012
The 2012 Computerworld Honors Program recognizes those organizations that create and use information technology to promote and advance the public welfare, benefit society and change the world for the better. Please check the category that you feel best suits your project.

The Categories are:
  1. Collaboration: Recognizes organizations for the innovative use of IT to expand beneficial economic, social, environmental, health or research initiatives to a new or previously underserved population, organization, country or continent.
  2. Digital Access: Recognizes organizations for the implementation of innovative strategies and technologies that result in the availability of Internet access and distribution of digital information to new and previously underserved populations.
  3. Economic Development: Recognizes organizations for the innovative use of IT to create, enable, improve or expand business and job opportunities, advance a positive work environment and/or provide support for entrepreneurs.
  4. Emerging Technology: Recognizes organizations for the bold and innovative creation or use of leading-edge and largely unproven technology to advance programs and services that benefit humanity.
  5. Environment: Recognizes organizations for the innovative application of IT to reduce waste, conserve energy or create and implement new products, processes, programs or services to help solve global or regional environmental problems.
  6. Health: Recognizes organizations for the innovative use of IT to conduct research; develop new diagnostic or treatment methods and services; improve the safety and quality of patient care; or improve access to, or the affordability of, healthcare.
  7. Human Services: Recognizes organizations for the innovative use of IT to effectively develop or deliver public programs that provide food and nutrition, housing, transportation, mental health or other social services to populations in need.
  8. Innovation: Recognizes organizations for the design and development of new technologies and/or the application of an existing technology in a new and unique way to advance overall human health, security or well-being.
  9. Safety & Security: Recognizes organizations for the innovative application of IT to significantly improve the safety and security of the populations they serve.
  10. Training/Education: Recognizes organizations for the innovative use of IT to create and improve learning programs and/or extend the reach of education and training to new and/or wider audiences, particularly those previously underserved.
