About Townsend, Tn

Townsend, TN is known to many as simply “The Peaceful Side of the Smoky Mountains” with its slower, easier pace compared to its neighboring towns of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, TN. More important is Townsend’s neighborly status to Cades Cove. In proximity to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Cades Cove area, Townsend is the closest town.

Townsend’s own Tuckaleechee Cove is also rich in Appalachian history and heritage. At Tuckaleeshee, the Little River gently descends from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park into this quiet community. Because this unique water source, it was a place that attracted and served as a home to pioneers for centuries. In fact, archaeological digs in the Townsend area have even uncovered evidence of settlers dating back thousands of years in the area. As far back as the 1700′s, settlers of European descent have settled the areas of Townsend and nearby Cades Cove. Townsend even offers several museums and historic sites like Cades Cove to keep us connected with the past.

The Little River Railroad and Lumber Company ruled the area in the early 1900′s when thousands of acres were a part of logging expeditions. This went on until 1928, when the idea of preserving the area as a national park first came to light. The museum located on the property contains hundreds of photographs, preserved railroad equipment and entertaining exhibits to interest the traveler as well as any railroad enthusiast. Enjoy the preserved locomotives and logging equipment throughout the museum. For more info, contact the Townsend Little River Railroad and Lumber Company Museum at 865-448-3060.

From Townsend, you are only 25 minutes to such regional places of interest like Dollywood and Pigeon Forge TN, Gatlinburg, and Sevierville. For more information contact the Townsend Visitors Center at 865-448-6134 or 1-800-525-6834.
