The future of WMWC

10/7/2008

Watch out world — she won’t be DJing a show until 2025, but my daughter’s found the station and is already prepping her first playlist:

WMWC in the Bullet

10/6/2008

Last month, the UMW Bullet published their latest article about the station, limply titled Campus Airs WMWC Daily:

Campus Airs WMWC Daily
Jessica Pike, Staff Writer
Date: Wed Sep 17 20:18:03 2008

After 62 years, University of Mary Washington’s WMWC is modernizing it’s sounds.

Soon WMWC, the University’s only campus radio station, will have the ability to start taking phone calls and live requests. Also, the music library is being digitalized.

“[It's] the best radio station that you’ve ever heard of,” senior Jason Walsh said, general manager of UMW’s campus radio station WMWC.

Within the Woodard Campus Center, across from the Washroom, lie the WMWC headquarters, marked by the music paraphernalia and a “Hippies use side door” sign displayed in the window.

Students can access the station 24/7 and listen to music, talk segments, and specialty shows. The exact schedule for the radio DJ and specialty shows has not been released.

Junior Sarah Kelley is a DJ for the Experimental Radio Show, a WMWC program that airs Wednesdays from 7-9 p.m. Kelley encourages all students to give the station a try.

“Getting people involved with music on campus is an exciting part of being involved in radio,” junior Connor Whitaker said.

Whitaker also works as a DJ who has a metal specialty show Tuesdays from 9-11 p.m.

There are numerous opportunities for student music and local bands to have airtime, even many open-mic spots. The station said it plays demo CDs sent by UMW students and local bands.

“Students can easily be trained on the mixer and other equipment in the studio,” senior William Loring said.

WMWC makes an effort to be involved with the events going on around campus, and works events free of charge. This year for Homecoming disc jockeys are teaming up with other student clubs to be involved with campus festivities.

Additionally, the disc jockeys are available to work off-campus events for a small fee.

“We are here, and we are available to play gigs out of the radio station,” Loring said.

More than 40 UMW students are actively involved in this student-run organization. On most weekdays there are DJ’s in the station from noon-12 a.m.

All WMWC radio members hope to raise awareness and spread the word that there is an on campus radio station with a group of students who love music and entertaining.

WMWC has been broadcasting to the Mary Washington community since 1946. As one of the oldest student run organizations, Jason Walsh is proud to state that their call sign WMWC is, “the last Mary Washington College namesake on campus.”

Raymond Tuttle, director of judicial affairs and community responsibility, is the station’s faculty adviser, and has been involved with the program for about twelve years. He believes college radio is an excellent opportunity to provide listeners with programming they can’t hear elsewhere.

“As time goes on, commercial radio tends to become blander and less adventurous, and college radio is an antidote to that,” Tuttle said.

Tuttle suggests that students who are interested in a career in broadcasting or communications should test the waters and see what the station has to offer.

“We’re here, we aren’t all music snobs, and we want people to stop by,” Loring said.

What’s funny is that I posted a comment twice to the article, and they deleted it both times without any explanation. I tried e-mailing the Bullet and the e-mail bounced back to me. Bravo, guys! To top it off, at the time of this writing, the article has two spam comments that haven’t been deleted.

Here’s the gist of my comment, since I’m not going to bother posting on their site again if they censor every freaking word that comes in:

Thanks for covering WMWC and good luck to Jason and the staff for keeping WMWC rolling!

I was a bit surprised by this sentence, however: “Soon WMWC, the University’s only campus radio station, will have the ability to start taking phone calls and live requests.” We had that capability back in 1994… don’t know how it’s something new unless the station lost that ability when they moved out of the attic and into the campus center.

In my original post, I wrote “when they were unceremoniously kicked out of the attic” instead of “when they moved out of the attic and into the campus center” but changed it in my second attempt thinking that perhaps criticism of the administration wasn’t appreciated.

Forum: Dead

9/1/2008

I’ve pulled the forum for the time being. Way too many stupid ass Russian spammers and the last real comment was from a year or more ago.

We’ll bring it back if anyone at the station is interested in being a co-moderator. Hit me up.

Audio archive

3/18/2008

Since there’s nothing new going on with WMWC here (seriously, current station folk, get in touch!), here’s a little something that WMWC alumni from 1994-2000 will enjoy: 90 minutes of station IDs, carts, ads, etc. from the station.

Eventually I’ll separate out the better ones and add them to an audio archive here, but for now, this is what you’ve got.

WMWC update… out of the attic

10/23/2006

Sadly, WMWC has moved out of the attic on the top floor of Lee Hall, which has been its home for decades. The autograph wall and doors o’ stickers will be lost to history, though they’ll live in on the photo section of this site (which sorely needs to be updated). However, there is some good news about the move, which comes courtesy of the current GM Zachary Zuro:

Our new location is in the Woodard Campus Center. Although we had to put our vinyl and turntables in storage for the period of time that we’re located in our interim space, we really like our new location. A lot of interest has been generated simply from being visible to the student body. Also, significant progress has been made towards our goal of campus intranet broadcast.

And now, I’ve got some updating to do to the WMWC site to revive things a bit. Let me know if you want to contribute or help out with maintenance.

Radio Silence

7/27/2006

Get it? Radio silence? That’s golden!

It’s been quiet around here for a while now. Anyone involved with the station for the upcoming school year, get in touch and let’s talk about how we can use the site to help the station.

WMWC Audioscrobbler group

By request, there’s now a WMWC Audioscrobbler group.

What is Audioscrobbler? I’m glad you asked.

Laze returns this Saturday

3/11/2005

I’m the webmaster, so I get to shill for my own show, right?

I’m returning to WMWC tomorrow night, Saturday the 12th from 10pm to midnight. If you’re not out celebrating being Irish even though you’re not, tune in and hear a real (half-)Irishman spin some hip-hop, breaks, soul, jazz, and assorted other good stuff. No matter how down you are, I guarantee I’ll hit you with some stuff you haven’t heard before.

So, c’mon… listen to gramps from class of ‘98 spin some illness that’ll leave you with a heavier hangover than any bar trip could…

Eagle’s Nest Table

2/20/2005

DJs,

WMWC needs a couple of people to sit at a table in the Eagle’s Nest from 11-12 and 1-2 this Monday. You’ll just be responsible for answering general questions about the radio station (”We have a radio station?” or “How do I become a DJ?”) and handing out free CDs. Pretty easy, and you win major brownie points for your help. If you’re interested, e-mail Bob a.s.a.p. at amcge4lm@umw.edu with the time slots you can cover.

Thanks for your help!

The Big Shindig

2/11/2005

WMWC will be DJing and sponsoring a booth at The Big Shindig this Friday night between 9 pm and 1 am in Great Hall. We will be needing DJs to sit at the booth during this time. Each shift will last an hour. You won’t be doing anything strenuous, just assisting with the carnival activities we’ve lined up.

If you can help out, please send an email to Bob at amcge4lm [at] umw [d.o.t] edu letting him know what time shift(s) you’re good for. Your help will be greatly appreciated - come out and support the station, and even if you can’t stick around long enough to help, make sure to stop by and say hello.

CD Brown Bagin’

1/31/2005

Attention DJs:

This is late notice but I want to get started on this project so we can tie up some loose ends. We’re doing Brown Bag CD grab (similar to the one we did at Club Carnival) for the LEAP/OSACS Big Shindig event. We’re going to comb through the CDs in the station office and sort them into a few piles: Keep / Give-away Good / Give-away Okay / and Give-away bad . If you’re interested in helping swing by the station tomorrow(Tues. 2/1/05) from 2:00 - 3:15p. I think we’ll only be there for that long considering we only have a few bins to sort through.

Stay hip

1/27/2005

Hey yall - we’re getting amped up here with the website. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for more events and content. Double-plus thanks to Ryan for getting this site up to begin with. If you should see him in your day to day lives, hug him.

Welcome

1/26/2005

It’s long overdue, but it’s finally here… welcome to the new wmwc.org. And, yes, I know it looks mighty similar to one of the other sites I designed, but give me a break… time’s tight.

Most of the old content has found it’s way onto the new site and in the proper format, though there are still some details to be worked out here and there. But the main change to note is that wmwc.org is now not only the site for station alumni, but for the station itself. Though it is not offically connected with the station, I’m offering up the space, time, and resources to the station. So amidst the historical information, you’ll find current news, meeting announcements, WMWC-sponsored events, etc.

Enjoy, and be sure to join in the forum.
