UTPA staff member is Texas State Star
Janie Caballero recognized for top performance IN 79-County network
Certified Business Advisor Janie CaballeroJanie Caballero, a Certified Business Advisor with the University of Texas - Pan American Small Business Development Center has earned the Texas State Star honor for her outstanding performance in 2011.
Caballero joined the UT Pan American SBDC four years ago. In this past year alone, she has helped clients start or expand 25 small businesses and create or retain over 450 jobs. She has put in more than 1,000 advising hours and gained an impressive total of nearly $8 million dollars in capital formation for 33 clients.
Caballero pioneered the Latina Hope Project, which has provided advising and training to low-income women to start their own home-based businesses. After completing her post-graduate certificate in healthcare administration and leadership, she helped present national SBDC training on the topic of advising medical professionals.
“Janie is a positive mentor for the staff and a great contributor to the success of the SBDC,” said Maria Juarez-Serna, Director of the UT Pan American SBDC. “She is a dedicated advisor to our small business clients and community partners.”
Last year, the UT Pan American SBDC was honored by the U.S. Small Business Administration with the Excellence and Innovation Award.
“We are proud to acknowledge the contributions of an exemplary advisor like Janie Caballero, who puts our SBDC values into action,” said Albert Salgado, Director of the South-West Texas Border SBDC Network.
“Janie’s a true team player, always eager to innovate new ways to serve clients,” added Mary Peters, associate director of the South-West Texas Border SBDC Network.
Caballero will receive a National ASBDC Star Performer Award for the South-West Texas Border SBDC Network at the 2012 ASBDC National Conference in New Orleans. A $1,000 scholarship will be granted to her center for Caballero’s participation at the conference.
Small business office opens in Carrizo Springs
Office opens in Texas’ booming Eagle Ford Shale area; center is a collaborative effort among UTSA, South-West Texas Border SBDC Network, and local SBDC offices
To reinforce business development efforts through The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Institute for Economic Development’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and to help communities become sustainable during the oil and gas play, UTSA has opened a SBDC Information Center in Carrizo Springs.
The center is located within the Middle Rio Grande Development Workforce Solutions offices at 307 W. Nopal St., Carrizo Springs, Texas 78834.
The Eagle Ford Shale, believed to be one of the most significant oil and gas discoveries in the country, now provides more than 12,000 workers with full-time jobs. Communities are welcoming the growth that the activity brings but are having challenges associated with such a dramatic economic upturn.
