Applied Computing BSc (Hons) Top-Up

Who is the course for?

This course is aimed at those students who have achieved an HND in a Computing related subject who wish to top-up to a full BSc (Hons) Degree via a further year of study. The degree is awarded by Bournemouth University but is delivered at Bridgwater College and is designed to develop the higher level skills valued by employers and industry. These skills are increasingly needed to succeed in an ever-changing business environment. The course aims to provide students with the pre-requisite knowledge to appreciate ongoing developments in Computing and the maximum opportunity to prepare for their future life and career. The focus is on practical research and project related skills, and an exploration of new and developing technologies and applications within Computing.

What will I study on the course?

To be awarded the BSc (Hons) in Applied Computing you will need to gain a minimum of 80 credits from the compulsory units below and 40 from the elective units. The course structure is research-driven and designed to give the broadest experience and exposure to subjects which will include:

What will I need for the course?

Applications will be viewed individually on their merits, but typically you will have recently gained an HND qualification in a Computing field, achieving a Merit profile or above in those subjects most relevant to the programme. All students will be required to complete a short academic study skills course in September prior to the start of the Honours programme.

What makes this course special?

The programme focuses on developing skills for microcomputer applications development and the microcomputing environment. There is a good mixture of theory and practice across a wide range of topics, making this a varied, interesting and relevant course. You will have access to a good level of support from experienced tutors who are specialists in their fields.

How will I be assessed?

Each unit will be assessed through coursework which will consist of assignments and/or laboratory work, combined with end of unit examinations. The individual project will be mainly assessed via the dissertation.

How long is the course?

This course is two days a week over one year combined with self directed study.

Will this course lead to a qualification?

Students achieving 120 credits will receive a BSc(Hons) Degree in Applied Computing from Bournemouth University.

What can I do on completion of this course?

A Masters Degree or PhD at university. Careers in end user support, support analysis, network administration, software training, business applications development, programming, software engineering and web development.
