Who are K-9 Angels?

K-9 Angels is a UK based non profit organisation created in order to provide a valuable link between dog rescuers all over the world and potential adopters in various EU and non EU countries.

In 2011, three animal loving girls in the UK media decided to join forces in order to help re-home dogs existing in dangerous places and adopt them over into countries of relative stability. Alongside charity Romanian Animal Aid (Action Aid for Animals) and many Romanian based Rescue organisations, K-9 Angels has been able to foster and place numerous dogs into safe UK homes.

Some background info on Romania & its stray dog problems:

Strays have been caught by the Romanian government-funded ‘dog catchers’ for many years now and taken to state run shelters where they are often destroyed in the most horrific ways. The dog catchers are often seen beating the strays to death and many do not ever reach the shelter, as they are killed in transit. The state shelters in Romania are not run correctly and starving inmates regularly are seen consuming the dead bodies of their cell mates. The conditions are squalid, food is scarce and hygiene is not a priority. Illegal euthanasia takes place in the form of ‘beating to death’, ‘hanging’, ‘injecting paint thinners’ and ‘poisoning’. Local rescuers and volunteers try in vain to help these poor dogs, but are often denied access. Improving the conditions of Romania’s state run shelters is one problem that K-9 Angels would like to address in 2012.

Romanian street dogs are physically abused, run over, poisoned and often shot. Local rescuers pick up as many stray dogs as they can and take them to ‘safe foster houses’ where they are protected until a permanent forever home can be arranged for them. Whilst people are trying to change government legislation, K-9 Angels along with their colleagues try and rescue and rehome as many dogs as possible before the dog catchers take them. We hope that this situation is not permanent and that in the future there will be positive change in Romania, so there is a good spay and neuter programme implemented and dogs are humanly captured, looked after and re-homed.

Other countries in the pipeline to be helped are Thailand, China and Korea. Along with charity Soi Dog, K-9 Angels hopes to re-home many rescued ‘meat dogs’ in the future. 2012 sees the arrival of K-9 Angels’ first rescued meat dog ‘Maya’ from Thailand. This is a very exciting step forward for the trio.

With your help, you can be a K-9 Angel too!
