The Back of the Yards Council and the Community Media Workshop’s Ethnic Media Project are leading Chicago’s black and Latino news media in an anti-violence project during the month of November, unprecedented for Chicago.

We Are Not Alone- No Estamos Solos

A number of the black and Latino news outlets have already agreed to take part and more are expected to join as the program starts in November.

This is an effort by the news media that speaks for the two communities to focus on ways that the Black and Latino communities are facing up to the violence that touches many lives.

The goal is to tell stories about the everyday heroes, the well-known community groups and all organizations, whether large or small, who are doing their best to deal with the violence and the problems that nurture it.

Too often the only stories we encounter show only one part of the picture and leave people hopeless and heartbroken.

The message of this project – We are Not Alone – No Estamos Solos – centers on residents working to make life better in their communities, that we need to know what others are doing and to remind us that this is a struggle that can be overcome.

By telling stories of the work done in the two communities, the effort will remind many Chicagoans of the strength that comes when communities work together.

We are asking everyone in the Black and Latino news media to do one story, one interview, one program – one gesture to show your commitment to this effort. We are also asking the news media to carry, if possible, a program, story or editorial that may have appeared in another community’s news outlet. This way it truly is a black-brown effort. We will create a facebook page where we will highlight the different efforts and allow for people to add their own voices. We will also create a webpage that will show all of the efforts and then link back to their own websites. We ask every news outlet to carry a widget from the campaign when they make their contribution. The widget says: We are Not Alone – No Estamos Solos.

When: Beginning with a 9:30 a.m. press conference on Wednesday, Nov. 10 in the Back of the Yards community. The effort will tell the stories of the communities’ work in TV and radio interviews, newspaper stories, online news efforts and bloggers’ websites and in our city’s many youth media projects.

Where: Saint Michael’s Gym located at 1986 W. 48th St. In the corner of 48th and Winchester. The gym is open during weeknights and offers youth a safe place to play and be young. Local neighborhood mothers who volunteer their time usually supervise this open space for youth along with officer Mejia from the 009 District Police Department and Father Tilford from St. Michael’s Catholic Church.

At the end of the campaign, we will have a public meeting to hear from the community and we will record this event so that we will have an audio history as well as what this effort has meant to our city.

No Estamos Solos-We are Not Alone

El lema dice: No Estamos Solos-We Are Not Alone.
