The Rub: Ten Years

Sunday 7/29 @ The Bell House

It's almost hard to believe that one of Brooklyn's best dance parties to hear everything from newer electro to classic disco, southern rap, 1970s funk, Golden Age hip hop and rare northern soul cuts, is turning ten-years-old.  The Rub has been going strong for a decade now, and since moving from the now defunct Southpaw to the larger Bell House, the party has grown even more.

Orchestre Poly-Rythmo

Today @ BAM

For over forty years, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo has been one of the premier West African funk bands who have collaborated with everybody from  Miriam Makeba to Fela Kuti.  The group rarely makes it over to the United States, so maybe consider skipping your lunch break and catching some funk instead?

Comedy: Stand up

Pretty Good Friends w/ Eugene Mirman

Today @ Williamsburg Park 50 Kent Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11211

Been missing your weekly sessions with Pretty Good Friends? Eugene Mirman takes a break from his summer vacation to bring his infamous comedy show to the wilds of Brooklyn's northside. Joined by Kristen Schaal, Kurt Braunohler, the legendary Bobcat Goldthwait, and several surprise guests, Mirman may raise enough ruckus that it can be heard clear across the East River. There's a musical guest too; OK Go are making a rare appearance. And if all this doesn't sound like funny reason enough, we suggest hitting this freebie as a way to see Williamsburg Park, the latest edition to the waterfront.

Music: Indie

Lower Dens w/ No Joy

Today @ The Bowery Ballroom

Sometime Devendra Banhart and CocoRosie collaborator Jana Hunter's latest project, Lower Dens, may be her strongest yet. On Twin-Hand Movement (2010), the band's debut release for Banhart's Gnomonsong label, they effortlessly and effectively assembled a collage of some of the best bits and pieces of rock music's past 60 years. Twin-Hand Movement's lead single, "Tea Lights," sounded like the Velvet Underground's slow-surging drums and bass in conversation with Television's melodic guitars. The band's sophomore LP, Nootropics, was released last month. Check out the video for the spellbinding track "Brains," directed by Tristan Patterson (Dragonslayer).

Party

Sound Waves on the Intrepid

Today @ Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

There are free summer parties and then there are free summer parties aboard the Intrepid. Tonight you have an opportunity to indulge in the latter, as the museum opens it decks to celebrate the arrival of the Space Shuttle Enterprise. Sway under the stars to tunes by Red Baraat, Delicate Steve, Javelin, and MNDR while noshing on food truck fare served up by Slouvaki Grill, Coolhaus, Kelvinslush, and the Milk Truck. It all does down while the sun sets over the Hudson. Sounds like a wonderful evening — with the only catch being a mandatory RSVP.
