* More Election Limericks

They call it the Land of the Free,
But I'm not sure it means me.
Though here born and bred
My freedom's a shred ?
I have no voter ID.

Before the election's done,
Before we know who won,
The brothers Koch
Are going for broke
Financing lies by the ton.

Seymour Joseph

* Re: The Radical Dissent of Helen Keller

We're right back to where things stood in Helen Keller's time.
What an inspiring person she was.

D. Ross

Thank you for this outstanding article.

* New UK Labor Leader Calls for Bank Staff to Have Say in
Deciding "Fat Cats" Pay

Frances O'Grady, who is due to take over as the first female
head of the TUC, has called for low-paid bank employees to be
included on the committees which decide the pay packages of
the executives at the top.

Seems like TWO long overdue "innovations". (1) The TUC is
playing catch-up with "allowing" women as leaders

(2) British banks (and businesses too???) are emulating
Germany (whose economy is doing a mite better.

Martin Morand

* NYT/CBS "poll" on Tea Party

Recently NYT/CBS asked members of the Tea Party what their
financial and educational status was and published their
answers in a much-cited "poll." The study concluded that
members of the Tea Party are richer and have reached a higher
educational level than most Americans.

I do not believe that this is true for the foot soldiers of
Dick Armey and the Koch brothers. These are the people who
howled their approval of Texas's high rate of execution at a
Republican primary and who shouted racial epithets at the
Civil Rights hero John Lewis. At least one of the tea party
factions has a militia man for its leader, and there are
several militia people in all the factions.

Over 50 years ago Richard Hofstadter maintained that the one
characteristic of the paranoid fringe of the right wing is
their status anxiety. Asking people who are worried about
their financial stability and their educational background is
almost like entrapment: they are sure to exaggerate. Asking
people whether they approve of Social Security or Medicare is
a poll; asking them what their financial status and their
educational background are is not a poll - it is a query.

Did NYT/CBS try to verify their conclusions? If not, people
should stop citing this study.

* Unleashing the Power of Real Girls

In the Post's report on the effort to get Seventeen to be more
substantative, "Seventeen to commit to a more modest goal:
printing one photo spread per issue without an unaltered
image." Obviously the goal is to print one spread WITH an
unaltered image.

* Update on our 'Online University of the Left' And How You
Can Help

We passed a mile marker today, 300 people on Facebook 'Liked'
the OUL page there. This means they also shared it with 4500
others connected to them, and they now get regular
announcements of changes and additions we make to the site.
https://www.facebook.com/OULeft.org

More than 1,000 unique people have visited OUL directly.
ouleft.org/What's most interesting about these is that
45% are 'regulars'--they keep coming back.

But all of this is still way too small. It's fine for a start,
but we want to multiply this by 10 or 100 or so. We've taken
out some experimental paid ads on Facebook to see how that
goes, and will try other places, too.

Most of all, we need the help of all Committees of
Correspondence members, their friends and other socialist
groups. A few of you have helped, but we need more. What can
you do?

1. If you haven't, join Facebook and 'like' our page there.
This not only get you in the loop, it widens our reach.

2. Encourage your local friends to do likewise. Forward this
message to selected people in your address book, with a note
from you.

3. Best of all, make use of it. Most left bookstore/cafes
have VGA projectors an drop- down screens. Nudge them to use
us for free programming, or schedule a class that you can lead
using our resources. Likewise if you're teaching on a campus.
Many of our items are suitable to enhance whatever you're
teaching, and you can turn students on to the resource

Keep us posted on any developments. We love feedback, and
suggestions for improvements and additions.

* Pastors to Challenge US Blockade of Cuba
Caravan to Cross US/Mexico Border with 100 Tons of
Humanitarian Aid to Cuba

When: 10 AM Thursday, July 19th
Where: McAllen/Hidalgo International Bridge Border Crossing
Contact: Jennifer Wager 917.499.4882
Tamara Hansen 778.882.5223
Lucia Bruno 347.423.4330 / 212.926.5757

Organizers of a humanitarian aid caravan that uses civil
disobedience to challenge the US blockade and travel ban of
Cuba will cross the US/Mexico border with nearly 100 tons of
humanitarian aid the morning of July 19th.

Organizers are unsure what to expect from the US border
authorities given their experience crossing from Canada into
the US on July 1st. US border authorities initially refused to
let sporting equipment through, but caravan supporters mounted
a 24 hour protest and border officials relented.

“We are determined to get this aid to our brothers and sisters
in Cuba. Our struggle must continue until this immoral, cruel
and counterproductive US blockade of Cuba is ended,” stated
IFCO Co-Director Father Luis Barrios.

IFCO Co-Director Gail Walker added, "The US blockade has cost
Cuba $750 billion in medical care, education equipment and
food, yet they still provide for their people and set an
example for the world. Now is the time to implement a people
to people foreign policy that respects Cuba's sovereignty."

As the caravanistas are crossing the border, they will stop to
recognize the ongoing inhumane treatment of Gerardo Hernández,
one of the Cuban Five anti-terrorist fighters held in US
prisons. Hernández, who is in the appeals process of his
double-life sentence, is currently being denied consular and
legal visitation rights by US authorities.

After the border crossing, scores of caravanistas will travel
through Mexico on to Cuba, without asking for a license or
permission from the US government. In Cuba caravanistas will
visit hospitals, cultural centers, churches and other
organizations focused on Cuba's sustainable development
efforts.

This is the 20th Anniversary Friendshipment Caravan organized
by IFCO/Pastors for Peace, which crisscrossed the US and
Canada, stopping in nearly 100 cities. Thousands have
supported the caravan along the way in support of a foreign
policy based on respect and non-aggression with Cuba.

The Pastors for Peace Friendshipment Caravan is a project of
the Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization
(IFCO.), which has been been working for racial, social, and
economic justice since 1967.
