"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Columbine" now available

In 2005, I got a lot of anger and frustration out of my system by writing the first draft of a novel. Six years, nine rewrites and polishes, dozens of "we like it but... uh... no" rejections, and one annoying hack of a literary agent later, that story is now available. Seeking revenge against a...

Fixing the “Back My Book” theme when WordPress 3.4 breaks it.top comments

by Pab on July 3, 2012 - 4 comments

I love WordPress. It makes life so much easier. And they update it regularly for security patches and to fix bugs. Unfortunately, from time to time they break a lot of shit, too. I “upgraded” my blog to WordPress 3.4 a while back and started getting this handy little message whenever I tried to get to my dashboard: Cannot redeclare class Custom_Image_Header in /wp-admin/custom-header.php on line 16 Nifty, huh? And because it broke my dashboard I couldn’t do anything about …

Is it worth the drive to save nine cents a gallon?top comments

by Pab on June 15, 2012 - 0 comments

I love GasBuddy. Especially when out on the road in unfamiliar territory it’s helped me find some great deals by continuing down the road to the next exit, or going slightly off the beaten path, to save a few cents a gallon. But the other day I was presented with a dilemma. A station three miles out of our way was a cent cheaper than one along our route. I wasn’t running on fumes but I also wasn’t in a …

Is Mitt Romney a Psychopath?top comments

by Pab on May 15, 2012 - 4 comments

Listening to this week’s encore presentation of This American Life, I found myself once again enraptured by the story of “the Psychopath Test” as discussed in this book by Jon Ronson. When the show first aired almost a year ago I was taken aback by its story of how the test was created, has been used, and has been abused, over the decades. But in light of recent revelations I found myself with a different thought running through my head …

Yahtwentee (or d20 Yahtzee)top comments

by Pab on April 28, 2012 - 1 comment

I’ve been re-living my misspent youth in a variety of ways the past week. For one thing, a number of recent conversations have involved the old role playing game Dungeons and Dragons, or at least the old Second Edition that I played. For another, I found a Yahtzee app for my iPhone and have been playing it obsessively. My mother taught me to play Yahtzee (or, I guess, since we played a variation and weren’t using the official Hasbro rules …

More proof: Comcast will lie to you to milk every last penny they can.

by Pab on March 31, 2012 - 0 comments

(By the way: for the Comcast hacks who are reading this, hello. This is Chat ID #EDF3552A-BD69-4B8C-93C3-49857AC2D365 I am talking about if you want to confirm that I’m not the one lying here.) On March 5, 2012 when my cable bill more than doubled overnight, I went into a webchat with some operators at Comcast. Eventually I wound up with a supervisor allegedly named “June.” I had the foresight to print out the webchat so I had a permanent record …

Let’s strike back at Comcast.

by Pab on March 31, 2012 - 0 comments

I have a long history with Comcast. (Just look at the “Comcast is evil” tag on blog posts here.) For too long they’ve been allowed to get away with monopolistic practices and harassment. Now it’s time to fight back. The next open meeting of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities is April 27th in Trenton at the State House Annex, Committee Room 11. The meeting will convene at 10 AM then go into closed door executive session until 11:15 …

More fuckery from Comcast

by Pab on March 30, 2012 - 3 comments

I have a long history with Comcast, going back to 1992. When their franchise agreement was up with our City that year they pissed off a lot of customers by dropping MTV. (Now, in hindsight, that might have saved the world from Snooki, but I digress.) I launched a political campaign to reject their franchise renewal. That’s when the bullshit started. The local office would call me constantly, “lose” my bill payments, interrupt my service, and so on. One time …

When you’re bitching and moaning about how Siri can’t find the nearest bus stop, or pet grooming parlor, or suicide prevention center, cheer up. Apple could have done a lot worse with their choice of artificial intelligence programs.

Help me get my “Queen Victoria” books back in print!

by Pab on February 12, 2012 - 1 comment

Since November of 2006, I have published collected editions of my daily comic strip, The New Adventures of Queen Victoria. This has always been done at my own expense, largely for the fans of the strip and so I will have something to take around with me to comic conventions. In recent weeks I finally ran out of copies of the fourth collection, “Suffragettes Gone Wild!” Also, “Meet The Royals” (the omnibus edition reprinting the first three collections) has only …

Note: I started writing this piece almost four years ago, in March of 2008. I had thought it lost when my machine crashed in the middle of writing it. I rediscovered most of it in my auto-save folder a few weeks later, but decided to take the crash as a sign and let it rest. But no longer. Recent events have convinced me the time had come to dust it off and finish it. I have chosen to retitle it …
