Aurora AS890C 8 Sheet Crosscut Paper/Credit Card Shredder with Basket

“Aurora AS890C Shredder” Aurora AS890C 8 Sheet Crosscut Paper/Credit Card Shredder with Basket

I was very pleased with this shredder. As I have purchased several shredders over the years, this is by far the best. It is quiet, compact and powerful. Perfect size for anyone who may do a fair amount of shredding as it does not take up too much space on a desk surface.

I highly recommend this shredder. Read the rest…

The Mummy (1999)

“Wildly amusing!” Sure, this film isn’t Citizen Kane or Gone with the Wind, but it’s one hell of a wild ride! This horror/comedy isn’t very satirical or symbolic: the residents of Perfection, Nevada, are being attacked by “Graboids,” which are humongous meat-eating worms that live underground, and everyone including Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward must destroy these beasts before they digest every single person in the town. I was very amused with this film: the special effects and the distinctive characters are what drives this one. Lots of high tension and black humor all around. It’s a definite cult classic.

Bellini: La Sonnambula (complete opera live 1955) with Maria Callas, Giuseppe Modesti, Leonard Bernstein, Chorus & Orchestra of La Scala, Milan

“Legendary Sonnambula” This live-recording is, even in an illustrious discography as Callas’, a wonder. A wonder of sheer perfection, love and beauty. Callas who could sing a blood-curdling Medea and Lady Macbeth sang the purest, most touching and tearful Amina. Just listen to Amina’s first aria to hear a voice of airy beauty, lucid warmth and tenderness. The duets with Elvino (The WONDERFUL Valletti, a true belcanto-tenor in the tradition of Schipa) soar to heaven rivalling the stars! And her madscene is unrivalled with the ornaments and incredible coloratura! A keeper! Read the rest…

The Lord of the Rings – The Return of the King (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition)

“Caught off-guard, but fully recovered” When the DVD arrived earlier than expected, I was taken aback. My previous extended edition of “LotR: Return of the King” had been a box set with four DVD’s (at least before my apartment building burned down). This DVD was a bit thicker than the standard DVD case and only had 2 discs.

I then saw that the movie was on a two-side disc and I was even more skeptical. I was only used to seeing “classics” on two-sided DVD’s — you know, the “classic” science fiction, horror and action movies you find in the dollar store for $2 each or 3-for-$5.

But, I watched the movie and it was in excellent condition (which was good since it was still in the cellophane wrapping). I did have to flip the DVD over, but that was no big deal because, with the previous boxed set, I had to switch discs anyway.

The DVD arrived in a very timely manner (at about the middle of the 14-day delivery window, not at the proverbial 14th day). So, my fears of inferior service assuaged, I w… Read the rest…

The Pianist

“Not just a history of a man, a history of a people” “The Pianist” is centered around the journey of Adrien Brody’s character, the real life composer Wladyslaw Szpilman. At first living comfortably with his family in an apartment and playing music for Polish radio, his life is shattered by the outbreak of war in 1939 and the consequences that followed. I should note that I personally think the front cover saying, “A riveting adventure story!” is a bit misleading. This film looks at the Holocaust, the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and the Warsaw City Uprising – how “riveting” is that going to get? And yes, Adrien Brody’s character does go with the flow of history, but I think it’s ridiculous to accuse him of cowardice as other reviewers have. How many of us would have immediately thought “Let’s fight back!” when put in the Holocaust? There’s a scene in the movie where a girl asks a Nazi officer where they’re taking them, and the officer shoots her in the head as soon as he’d tie his shoe. In this sort of environment, how would we react?

National Lampoon’s Vegas Vacation

“It’s vegas baby!” Awesome movie! Funny, very-well paced, charming. Overall

outstanding, even a nose better than X-mas vacation! “Why don’t you just give me half of what you were going to bet, I’ll take you outside, kick you in the nuts, and we’ll call it a night!” The work they did on the soundtrack/sound editing on this movie is tremendous, it adds so much to the humor and atmosphere, outstanding work! Everlast Women’s Pro Style Training Gloves (Pink)

“Great Purchase” These gloves are an excellent purchase for anyone who is in a boxing or kickboxing class or for the casual user who likes to hit the bag at home. I’m a small girl (5′3), with small hands, but after trying on the 12oz gloves at the store, I opted to purchase the 14oz ones off of Amazon instead. I’m extremely glad that I did because my hands fit inside the 14oz gloves perfectly whether I’m wearing wraps or not, whereas my fingers were a little cramped inside the 12oz gloves when I didn’t have wraps on. The padding on the gloves is exceptional, I never hurt my hands hitting the bag or during drills in class. The color has gotten me quite a few compliments, however the one minor complaint I have is that there is no headgear to match. Everlast makes camouflage, yellow, red, blue, and black gloves all with matching headgear, however their pink gloves do not come with any matching accessories except wraps and finding matching headgear online has been kind of a headache. Overall, I woul… Read the rest…

Harman Kardon AVR-354 7×75W 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver

“I like it, but it’s not perfect” First, I want to say that the features of this receiver are great for the price. I upgraded from an older HK AVR-520, which served me well for about eight years. It lacked HDMI, so I guess it was time to move up.

My main complaint is that the receiver ships with old firmware. Not a huge deal, but they should really include the cable to do the updates, as most of us don’t have an RS232 serial cable just laying around. I have not gotten around to doing the firmware update yet, because I am waiting for a USB to RS232 cable. I went with the IOGEAR cable (about $20) as recommended by the manual. Hopefully it works.

The issues I’ve had so far are relatively few. When I connected both my cable box and Xbox 360 via Component cables, the receiver will convert the signals and send them over the HDMI to the TV. Not sure why, but both the Xbox and the cable were very dark, and I couldn’t find any way to fix it in in the menus, or just have it pass component inputs thr… Read the rest…

Link Pin Remover for Bracelet Adjustment Watch Sizing

“The best 12 dollars I have ever spent!” I just had a watch buying spree and had three that needed to be sized. I watched the jeweler do it before and said that looks doable so I started looking for something so I could do it my self. All other products were not worth it. I usually get charged $8 to size a watch and for the price I was seeing I was just like, forget it I will just take them in. THEN! I ran across this product on sale for $12 I bought it with no expectations. I have never sized a watch before and when it arrived I opened the box and was a little shocked that there are very few directions. So with a little common sense and the few times I saw it done I proceeded to size 3 $400+ watches in less that 5 minutes! It paid for itself the day I opened it! Thank you so much! I will always need a watch repairperson but never again will I have to wait to wear a new watch. Read the rest…

Murad Acne Complex Starter Kit ($51 Value) Acne Complex Starter Kit

“Be a label-reader” I am a label-reader by hobby and a chemist by profession. It’s important when trying these facial products to know what the active ingredient is. This product uses salicylic acid. The spot treatment uses sulfur as an active ingredient. I’ve never seen the infomercial that so many of the reviewers have spoken about, I just tried this kit after researching. I know my facial skin is allergic to benzoyl peroxide (proactive, panoxyl, some clearasil products, etc). My face responds well to salicylic acid (neutrogena, clean & clear). Still other skin types will respond well to triclosan or zinc oxide. Murad uses salicylic acid in a much higher concentration than the cheaper, discount store products. People who broke out after using this product most likely don’t respond well to sulfur or salicylic acid. I am 29, have combination skin and light acne scarring. I’ve been using this product for a week and I’ve seen marked improvement. Just know your skin! Not everyone’s is alike! Read the rest…

Just Grandma & Me

“A Warm Story” The reader reads this Mercer Mayer classic at a very slow pace. There are some cute surprises as the child clicks on parts of the drawings (mailbox opens, birds flutter etc.) and there is a limited sand castle building component among the choices, but I found the CD to be relatively slow as compared to other early learning CD’s. The surprise was my grand daughter’s reaction. This was one of her most frequently chosen items when we sat down to the computer together. Now 4 and more interrested in her alphabet and skills, the CD sits unchosen but it was probably her favorite at ages 2 and 3! Read the rest…

It Happened One Night

“A timeless classic!” Ellen Andrews (Claudette Colbert) is a rich, young woman who escapes from her father to be with her husband in New York. On the train on her way, she meets a charming newspaper reporter, Peter Warne (Clark Gable). They don’t get along at first, but they quickly become friends. When he finds out that Ellie is running away from her father, Peter decides to help her and also to make his journey with her into a news article. Soon, they find themselves falling in love with each other.

A hilarious and romantic movie, It Happened One Night is one of the best classics ever. The writing, the acting — everything about it is excellent. You know a movie is something special when nearly seventy years since it’s release, it is still as cherished as ever! Read the rest…
