"The Future-State CIO® will not only be accountable for IT function success and business process transformation, but will adopt a more company-external focus and concentrate the majority of his/her time on using information to drive innovation and strategic advantage in pursuit of business goals."- The CIO Executive Council

The Council's Future-State CIO® program was developed in 2007 by a group of thought leaders from companies including Chevron, H&R Block and Raytheon. The goal was to define the future of the CIO role rather than letting it define us as CIOs. We built a now widely accepted model that divided the CIO role into three stages -- Function Head, Transformation Leader and Business Strategist-which is the Future-State CIO®. In 2010, the number of CIOs classified as Business Strategists by the 2010 State of the CIO survey has nearly doubled from 2008 levels. But as explained in this report, State of the CIO 2010: Three Types of CIO--Business Strategists Gain Ground, they are still the minority.

That's why in 2010 the Council shifted focus to the journey to the future state. Council members are now working to develop additional resources to advance the profession as a whole, including:

  • Role advancement framework and competency development map
  • Best practices research and field guide
  • CEO thought leadership and influence
  • Assessment tools - Your Leadership Portfolio: Developing the Competencies of a Future-State CIO
  • Seminars for CIOs, workshops, panels and peer roundtables for senior managers
  • Advice and workshops on solving the challenges of the CIO Paradox
  • Influencing the profession through press and media opportunities

Future-State CIOs from Bayer, Mazda and Direct Energy have written about their own approach to the Future-State CIO® competencies in the Council's mentor series in CIO magazine's Connect section. Check out the solutions to the inherent CIO Paradox that continually thwart our success within this series of articles.

And we are already working to develop your senior team for the future state. In partnership with global executive recruiter and talent assessment firm Egon Zehnder, we built a competency assessment program for CIOs that is also the same model that is used in the next-generation leadership development program, Pathways.
