WMS and WFS Layers Offered By Astrogeology

For target specific WFS and WMS layers you can prepend the target name (eg: Marsmaps.html). Additionally you can request these layers in json and xml.


All of our non-polar layers are in the Planetocentric, Positive East, 0-360 coordinate domain, the polar WMS projections are in meters.

Layer Properties

  • Target: (text) Capitalized name of the Planetary Body.
  • System: (text) Capitalized name of the System the Planetary Body is in.
  • Targets NAIF ID: (integer) NAIF Identifiers for the Planetary Body [1].
  • A axis radius (km): (decimal) kilometer dimension of the semi major axis (x) for the target [2].
  • B axis radius (km): (decimal) kilometer dimension of the semi major axis (y) for the target [3].
  • C axis radius (km): (decimal) kilometer dimension of the semi minor axis (polar radius) for the target [4].
  • Layer Name: (text) Display Name for the Layer.
  • Projection: (text) cylindrical, north-polar stereographic, or south-polar stereographic.
  • Control Network: (text) Control Network used for the image (target specific).
  • Layer Type: (text) WMS, WFS, TMS, or TileCache.
  • URL: (text) full url to the map server.
  • Map: (text) Path to the specific map, will be the value of the map http GET variable.
  • Layer: (text) Short Name for the Layer.
  • Units: (text) dd = decimal degress, m = meters, ft = feet, km = kilometers, mi = miles, or inches.
  • Format: (text) usually image/png.
  • Transparent Layer?: (boolean) if this layer is transparent.
  • Left Bounds: (decimal) boundary of the layer.
  • Right Bounds: (decimal) boundary of the layer.
  • Top Bounds: (decimal) boundary of the layer.
  • Bottom Bounds: (decimal) boundary of the layer.
  • Primary Layer?: (boolean) If this layer should be used as a default base layer.
  • Citation: (text) Reference Citation for layer.
  • Notes: (text) Any special notes for the layer.
