Washington Redskins
As the Washington Redskins head into their 2008 NFL season in the NFC East, they are also blowing out candles to their 7 th season this coming September. It is hard to believe that it all started in 1932 for the native Landover , Maryland team under the ownership of George Preston Marshall, and at the time the team was still going by the Boston "Football" Braves. It wasn't until 1937 that the team was given their Washington Redskins name, rooting to their homestead of Washington , D.C. Now heading into their 2008 season, the Redskins are under the ownership of Dan Snyder and answer to head coach Jim Zorn.
Not only are the Washington Redskins known for their amazing fan base and support at every home and away game, but the boys are also valued as the second most valuable franchise in the National Football League, paling only to the Dallas Cowboys. Not too shabby of a feat, and if looking at their team history is any sign about it the Redskins have earned it all and then some.
From the beginning of their journey, the Redskins have taken away five conference championships, twelve division championships, two NFL championships and a whopping three Super Bowl wins. As they head into their 2008 season, the boys hope all of the positive choices they have seen throughout their offseason will allow them to forget more and more about their 9-7 ending performance in their 2007 season record.
It wasn't an easy offseason for the Redskins. On January 8 th , their head coach Joe Gibbs announced his retirement. It took a while to finally find Jim Zorn and all the great talent and strength he will be bringing to the team, along with new offensive coordinator Sherman Smith. Associate head coach Al Saunders and assistant head coach Gregg Williams were let go during the offseason as well.
The Redskins offseason also brought about quite a few departures and arrivals with the rosters concern. Wide receiver Brandon Lloyd was released and went on to the Bears, Mark Brunell, Reche Caldwell, Rick DeMulling, Randall Godfrey, Brian Kozlowski, David Macklin, Keenan McCardell, Pierson Prioleau, Mike Pucillo and Omar Stoutmire were among the rest not heading into the Redskins 2008 season.
This year's 2008 NFL Draft brought about some amazing picks for the Redskins. Wide receiver Devin Thomas from Michigan State , tight end Fred Davis from Southern Cal and wide receiver Malcolm Kelly coming from Oklahoma were among the three key players picked up in the second round. Offensive guard Chad Rinehart from Northern Iowa, cornerback Justin Tryon from Arizona State, punter Durant Brooks from Georgia Tech, safety Kareen Moore from Nicholls State, quarterback Colt Brennan from Hawaii, Defensive end Rob Jackson from Kansas State and safety Chris Horton from UCLA are all among the ten rookies and new blood for the Washington Redskins as they prepare to start the highly potential and anticipated 2008 season.
The Redskins will kick off their first regular game of the 2008 season on September 4th against the New York Giants at the Giants Stadium.
