Race and Place: Race Relations in an American City (Cambridge Studies in Public Opinion and Political Psychology)

spacer

This book focuses on the impact of residential changes on the attitudes and behavior of African-Americans and whites. Will whites’ attitudes about blacks and blacks’ attitudes toward whites change if they are living in integrated neighborhoods rather than apart from one another? Are black suburbanites more likely to share the views of their fellow white suburbanites or of their fellow African-Americans in the central city? Will residential integration and new patterns of race in the suburbs break down divisions between blacks and whites in their views of local public services? These are the central questions of this book.

Women and Disability: The Double Handicap

Women and Disability: The Double Handicap

spacer

The special needs of women with disabilities have been disregarded in a wide variety of vital areas.  Issues pertain to women as wives and mothers.  Studies of the effects on female sexuality of such conditions as renal disease and diabetes are lacking, though the sexual functioning of men with these diseases has been researched.  On the economic front, the Federal-State Vocational Rehabilitation system and the regulations concerning disability benefits under Social Security provide less adequately for women than for men. Hopefully, this volume will raise the consciousness of its readers to the special status of women with disabilities as a minority group experiences multiple sources of discriminations.

Obama Issues Policy Directive to Stop Deportation of Young Immigrants

Obama Issues Policy Directive to Stop Deportation of Young Immigrants

Attorney Sean Lewis

Nashville, TN (PRWEB) August 07, 2012

As of August 15th, the undocumented children of illegal immigrants, now being referred to as “Dreamers”, can begin the application and approval process to potentially receive legal status and a U.S. work permit.

Numerous law offices across the country are gearing up to offer consultations to people who may be eligible to benefit from Obama’s new directive, but who don’t want to potentially jeopardize themselves by signing up for the process. Immigration Attorney Sean Lewis, Senior Partner at Music City Visa in Nashville Tennessee, is a rock star-turned-attorney with a unique perceptive on the issue.

Sean Lewis attributes his less-than-conventional background to the passion that drives him to help Dreamers follow their dreams.

“I know what it’s like to pursue a dream, and how challenging it can feel at times…” says Lewis, “…and I’m passionate about helping these young people achieve theirs.”

Sean Lewis cleans up well. As a lead guitarist in a popular heavy metal rock band since the 80s, Lewis’ standard garb included big hair, black leather and a whole lot of attitude. Nowadays, his hair is a whole lot shorter and he has traded in his guitar for a pen and a passion for helping unauthorized immigrants become citizens of the United States. And while he still tours occasionally, serenading his worldwide audience with fiery electric guitar solos, Lewis can mainly be found wearing a suit and tie at his law offices in Nashville, lovingly called Music City Visa.

“After college, I had an awakening…” Sean explains, “…I was living my dream of being a rock star but I saw that so many others were being prevented from achieving theirs, largely because they were victims of circumstance.”

Music City Visa are now helping Dreamers figure out whether or not they can qualify for Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Initiative, which will be accepting applicants as of August 15, 2012.

DACA is an Executive Order signed by President Obama last June that will give temporary relief to the sons and daughters of undocumented immigrants who were in danger of being deported from the United States. The Order decriminalizes the status of undocumented immigrants under 31 who meet the following requirements:

Are under 31 years of age but older than age 15
Came to the United States before they were 16 years old
Have lived in the United States for the last five years
Are currently in school, have graduated from high school, have obtained a general education development certificate, or are honorably discharged veterans of the Coast Guard or Armed Forces of the United States
Have not been convicted of a felony offense, a significant misdemeanor offense, multiple misdemeanor offenses, or otherwise pose a threat to national security or public safety

Despite his enthusiasm for Obama’s Order, Sean Lewis also advises that “this order has not yet been passed through Congress and made into law” and “strongly encourages those seeking potential benefits under the DACA initiative to consult with an attorney before applying on their own”.

International Disaster Relief Charity Addresses Emergency Shelter Needs in the Sahel as Clinton Global Initiative Commitment

Sarasota, Fla. (PRWEB) September 27, 2012

ShelterBox USA, an international humanitarian relief organization that provides emergency shelter and lifesaving equipment to disaster survivors worldwide, aims to aid 1,000 families in the Sahel region of West Africa as part of its Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) commitment.

Families in the Sahel region are suffering from multiple crises, including severe drought, causing food shortages; heavy rains and flooding in other areas, causing families to lose their homes; and ongoing conflict and political instability, causing tens of thousands of Malian refugees to flee into neighboring countries.

ShelterBox responds to disasters such as hurricane, earthquake, flood, tsunami or conflict by delivering high-quality tented shelter and other supplies to help families rebuild their lives in the days, weeks and months following a disaster.

In its eighth year, the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting connects and inspires its members, including public-, private- and social-sector leaders to find innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges. Annually, the initiative asks its members to make a commitment to address those challenges, from women’s and economic empowerment to energy efficiency and global healthcare.

To address the needs of those impacted by food insecurity and flooding in West Africa, ShelterBox partnered with other organizations and companies, including UPS, which provided charter flights to transport aid to the region, and will continue to work with other CGI members in its response.

“The Clinton Global Initiative asks its members to address challenging global issues through innovation and collaboration,” said Emily Sperling, ShelterBox USA president. “We are pleased we can apply the ShelterBox solution in conjunction with other partners to address the needs of vulnerable families displaced by circumstances well beyond their control.”

FOOD INSECURITY, CONFLICT AND POLITICAL INSTABILITY IN THE REGION

The Sahel region in West Africa is suffering from severe drought. According to the European Commission Humanitarian Aid and Civil Project ECHO Report, more than 18.7 million people lack access to sufficient food.

In Mali, one of the region’s most impacted countries, food insecurity, coupled with conflict and political instability, is creating forced displacement of people as they flee over the border into neighboring countries.

Within Mali, there are approximately 200,000 internally displaced persons, with 190,000 Malian refugees in surrounding countries as cited by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Many Malians have fled to Niger, where, according to the UNHCR, more than 40,000 refugees from Mali had entered as of May 2012.

Malian refugees arriving in Niger are without adequate shelter to protect them from the elements, including extreme heat during the day and cold temperatures at night, and provide them with basic security, privacy and dignity.

Inadequate shelter can be a major factor in refugee health and survival, especially in regard to protection against disease outbreaks. In addition, parts of Niger are experiencing what some reports are calling the worst flooding in 80 years and thousands of Nigerian families have been left homeless. The country’s already limited response capabilities are being overburdened by competing disasters.

SHELTERBOX SUPPLIES FOR APPROXIMATELY 1,000 FAMILIES

To aid Malian families seeking refuge in Niger and Nigerian families left homeless by heavy flooding in the region, ShelterBox will provide approximately 1,000 high-quality family tents designed to withstand extreme temperatures, intense UV light, high winds, and heavy rainfall. In addition, ShelterBox will provide 500 families with treated mosquito nets and microbiological water purifiers.

To further assess need and distribute aid, ShelterBox will utilize its highly-trained volunteers and coordinate with established NGO partners and the government of Niger.

ShelterBox welcomes partners interested in providing financial resources to expand the number of families provided with emergency shelter in the Sahel region and other areas around the world.

Absolute Rights Publishes Eightieth Edition of Popular Newsletter

Absolute Rights Publishes Eightieth Edition of Popular Newsletter

Austin, TX (PRWEB) September 20, 2012

Absolute Rights, the leading freedom protecting and civil rights informational publication, has published the eightieth edition of their semiweekly Newsletter. This milestone coincides with a current news story about the Middle Eastern violence in response to an anti-Islam movie, as well as an attack on a Coalition Forces military base in Afghanistan, and the most recent Presidential polls.

The main article was written by Tim Young, Absolute Rights’ Managing Editor. Entitled “Your First Amendment Rights Under Attack,” the Newsletter piece related the recent anti-Islam video to America’s Freedom of Speech issue. While the administration denounced the video, Young said that it may lead to further restrictions on what people can say and what they can’t.

“The problem with the limitations of free speech, and I have said this before on Absolute Rights, is that when you begin to take one piece of it away, you open yourself up to have more and more taken away until it’s practically illegal to say anything that you want to say,” Young wrote.

“Freedom of speech is why we have a lot of disgusting things in our society, but it’s also why we can stand up for ourselves and speak our minds against the government,” Young said in the article.

The Crisis Ops portion of the Newsletter covers the proper footwear to have in a survival situation. “What you will want is a good pair of boots,” the article said. “Something light weight and has a good all-terrain coating to them. You’ll want something that has a tough exterior and can keep you warm. You’ll also want something that has a tough exterior and can handle taking a few hits.”

Global Watch, the international affairs section, highlighted the recent attacks on an Afghanistan military base by Afghani insurgents dressed in American uniforms. “The strategy of wearing US military uniforms is not unique to this attack,” said the article. “Afghan insurgents had worn them before to attack coalition troops in May of 2010. This strategy was also used in Iraq in 2007.”

The final part of the Newsletter is the Contender’s Corner, where Young analyzes the latest polls on the Presidential race.

“If you’re like me,” said Young, “you’ve probably been a little bit more than shocked that Mitt Romney has been making as many slip-ups as he has in the media spotlight. Not only am I shocked at that, but also his inability to fight back against the media when they jump down his throat [for] misspeaking or saying something inappropriate.”

The Absolute Rights Newsletter is sent to thousands of Absolute Rights email subscribers as part of the never-ending effort to bring relevant and captivating content directly to readers. Newsletters are distributed via email and the articles then appear online at AbsoluteRights.com.

Tim Young, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, joined Absolute Rights in the spring of 2012 and brought his brutally honest opinions with him. He has been consulted as an expert on campaign, social security, health care and labor policies. A professional stand-up comic, Young combines his political and comedic background to add a captivating voice to Absolute Rights’ mission of rights protection.

Absolute Rights informs patriotic Americans on their given rights, plus helps protect those rights from government or disaster intrusion. Most importantly, it prides itself on alerting people when their rights are being threatened, creating an active and informed community.
