I Only See Asians

Posted on by bs

Yani Tseng might get some flack for speaking what is a general truth.

Most of the time, on Monday mornings, the only people you see on the range are Asians. I mean, only see Asians.

There’s a reason Asian players largely dominate women’s golf, and this is probably a contributing factor.

Sim Park 6/10 Round Details

Posted on by bs

Course: Sim Park Golf Course
Date: 6/10/12

This is the eighth of eight weeks of the Wichita Adult Golf League. Each week, teams of two play 9 holes of four ball. My teammate this year is my daughter again. We finished in 2nd place overall in the 2011 league. For 2012, there are 32 teams signed up.

Good weather this week with winds about 10-15 from the south.

#1 – Par 4 straight-away. Hit a little push with a Driver into the right rough that didn’t go very far. SW from 90 ran about 25 feet past the hole – couldn’t get any spin downwind and out of rough. First putt went 4 feet past, and made the comeback. Par E

#2 – Par 4 dogleg right. Another push, this time with a 3W that stuck me deep in the trees. Had 140 to the hole and had to punch an 8-iron about 7 feet off the ground. Ball managed to just trickle onto the front edge of the green. Good first putt, and a tap in for par. E

MacDonald GC Round Details #2

Posted on by bs

Course: MacDonald Golf Course
Date: 5/20/12

This is week six of the Wichita Adult Golf League. Each week, teams of two play 9 holes of four ball. My teammate this year is my daughter again. We finished in 2nd place overall in the 2011 league. For 2012, there are 32 teams signed up.

Weather was about 80 degrees with a light wind from the north that was blowing 15-20 by the end of the round.

#1 – Par 5 straight down wind with trees left and right. Hit driver that missed the fairway to the right by a foot. Had 210 to the hole and hit an 5 iron to the front right corner, about 50 feet away. Poor first putt came up 8 feet short. Didn’t get the birdie putt high enough. 3 putt par. E

#2 – Longish par 3 slightly downwind – I hit a perfect 7 iron, but it wasn’t enough club and I ended up 5 feet short of the green in the front fringe. Chipped with a 9-iron, but got it a little hard and left myself with 4 feet downhill left to right. Hit an OK putt, but had the wrong line. Bogey. +1

Sim Park Round Details

Course: Sim Park Golf Course
Date: 5/12/12

This is the fourth of eight weeks of the Wichita Adult Golf League. Each week, teams of two play 9 holes of four ball. My teammate this year is my daughter again. We finished in 2nd place overall in the 2011 league. For 2012, there are 32 teams signed up.

Perfect weather this week with very light winds.

#1 – Par 4 straight-away. Hit a little push with a 3W into the right rough. SW from 125 came up about 2 steps short of the green with a front pin. Hit my chip too hard, but it hit the flag and stopped about 4 feet away. Terrible putt that was always left. Bogey. +1

#2 – Par 4 dogleg right. Normally hit 3W off this tee, but decided to go after a driver and never committed to the swing. Result was a huge pull into the fairway of the next hole over. Had an opening from 135 to another front pin, and missed the green short by 2 steps. Hit a terrible chip than ran 15 feet past and left me with a fast downhill putt. Hit a good putt, but misread the break – another bogey. +2

Tex Consolver Round Details

Course: Tex Consolver Golf Course
Date: 5/6/12

This is the fourth of eight weeks of the Wichita Adult Golf League. Each week, teams of two play 9 holes of four ball. My teammate this year is my daughter again. We finished in 2nd place overall in the 2011 league. For 2012, there are 32 teams signed up.

Weather started off great for the first two holes, then the wind picked up to about 20-25 from the north as a cold front came thru..

#1 – Par 4 dogleg right with a fairway bunker at the corner. Pushed a driver to the right of the bunker but found an opening. Hit SW to the middle of the green and 2-putted from about 30 feet. E

#2 – Par 4 with water left, trees and water right. Hit Hybrid off the tee down the middle. In between clubs for approach and choked down on an 8-iron to a back edge pin, but it bounced thru the green by about 2 feet. Chip with a PW from about 20 feet, and made it for birdie. -1

Auburn Hills Round Details

Posted on by bs

Course: Auburn Hills Golf Course
Date: 4/29/12

This is the third of eight weeks of the Wichita Adult Golf League.  Each week, teams of two play 9 holes of four ball.  My teammate this year is my daughter again.  We finished in 2nd place overall in the 2011 league.  For 2012, there are 32 teams signed up.

Weather was pretty good for this round with light winds and wet conditions due to morning rains.

#1 – Par 4 with OB left and water right. Hit a hybrid that found the right side of the fairway. 130 to the hole, I bladed my GW and it hit a cart path and went OB. Dropped and hit next shot to 15 feet. Left the bogey putt just and made double. +2

#2 – Par 4 with a wide fairway. Hit 3W to right side of fairway. Only had 75 yards left with a good angle, but hit it too far and had a 40 footer for birdie. Easy 2 putt for par. +2

LW Clapp Round Details

Course: LW Clapp Golf Course
Date: 4/22/12

This is the second of eight weeks of the Wichita Adult Golf League. Each week, teams of two play 9 holes of four ball. My teammate this year is my daughter again. We finished in 2nd place overall in the 2011 league. For 2012, there are 32 teams signed up.

Weather was pretty good for this round, though the wind was blowing 20-30mph from the north. Clapp is a very protected course, but its also tiny – with a creek winding through most holes, out-of-bounds in play and loads of trees just off the fairways.

#1 – Par 4 straight down wind with trees left and right. Hit 3w off the tee and didn’t hit it great, but got it in the fairway. 135 left to the green and hit a full SW that just made it onto the front of the green. Left the 20 foot birdie short by about 2 feet, made the par putt. E

#2 – Par 4 with wind from the right. Another 3w off the tee as the out-of-bounds comes in close on the right if you push a driver. Like always, I pushed it towards that OB, but it ended up fine. Hit a terrible pitch that trickled onto the green about 30 feet away. Again, short with the birdie putt and cleaned up for par. E

MacDonald Golf Course Round Details

Course: MacDonald Golf Course
Date: 4/15/12

This is the first of eight weeks of the Wichita Adult Golf League. Each week, teams of two play 9 holes of four ball. My teammate this year is my daughter again. We finished in 2nd place overall in the 2011 league. For 2012, there are 32 teams signed up.

Weather was bad for this round. We had tornado’s the day before and the wind was 30-40mph all day. Our opponents didn’t show up on time, so we went off on our own. I assumed their either would not show up at all or would be DQ’d for the day for missing their tee time so decided to play more aggressively than I normally would.

#1 – Par 5 straight down wind with trees left and right. Felt very uncomfortable (normally I hit 3w off this tee), but made a good swing with a driver and hit the fairway. Had 190 to the hole and hit an 8 iron to 15 feet. Putt was straight up the hill, and I made it for eagle. -2

#2 – Longish par 3 straight back into the wind – I hit 5 iron, which wasn’t enough club and ended up in the front right bunker. Because of the rains, the bunkers all had water in the bottom, and the remaining sand was very compacted. My SW bounced into the ball and it went long of the green. A decent flop shot to 10 feet, and missed the putt. E

Easter Practice

Posted on by bs

Hit balls today. It has been a couple weeks since I’ve hit anything but wedges so didn’t know what to expect.

Todays focus was on getting aligned correctly (I tend to get shut with my feet and open with my shoulders if I don’t monitor it), making sure I have sufficient spine tilt at address, and turning my right shoulder towards the ball on the downswing.

Ended up hitting the ball really well. First 10 or so shots with a SW were right at flag and the correct distance.

Switched to a PW towards a 140 flag and hit several shots just short of the hole.

Next hit some 6 irons at the 190 flag.  Wind was slightly down breeze today and I was able to hit my 7 iron the same distance as the 6. That could be the wind, or it could be something else.  I should get the loft and lies checked on these irons.

Next target was the 210 flag. I should have been able to hit a 4 or 5 iron to this target but struggled to get the proper distance. Ended up needing my 3 hybrid to reach the flag.

Moved on to some 3 woods and drivers  – hit them well. Misses were primarily straight pulls. Did hit a couple that missed right, but I think they were an effect of trying to avoid the pull.

Pull seemed to be caused by hurrying from the top and trying to lay on the speed.  Straightened it out by focusing on posture thru impact with right shoulder going towards ball in downswing.

Came back to 210 flag for the last few balls and hit two 4 irons in a row next to hole so perhaps distance issue earlier was due to a swing flaw.

Golf Instruction/Strategy Gone Wrong

Posted on by bs

spacer So I picked up How to Break 90 in the hopes that I could find a few nuggets that I might be able to use to help Taylor improve. Instead, what I found was the most useless golf instruction/strategy book I could imagine.

The ball flight laws (how to hit a draw/fade) were incorrect. Aiming your clubface at the target and making your swing path go to the right will not result in a draw to the target – it’ll result in a ball that starts basically at the hole and hooks from there.

There wasn’t a single thing in this book that I didn’t already know that would be worth passing on to Taylor. Glad I bought it used.

Prairie Trails Round Details

Posted on by bs

Course: Prairie Trails
Date: 3/25/12

Nice weather for this round, though the wind did start blowing 15-20 after the first few holes. The course was packed and play was very slow – 2:45 for the front 9. The nines had been flipped from the last time I played and it really works better with this routing, even though it emphasizes the blind tee shots.

#1 – Blind driver to a downhill Par 4. Hit my worst shot of the day off this tee, weak and right. Hit perfect 8-iron to green but it was long. Good flop shot to 8 feet. Made the putt for par. E

#2 – Blind tee shot for this dog leg left Par 5. Hit a perfect draw into middle of fairway. After 10+ minute wait, hit a cut 6 iron that didnt cut and ended up just left of the green. Hit decent flop shot (most greens are elevated here) to 8 feet. Misread break, made par. E

Quail Ridge Round Details

Posted on by bs

Course: Quail Ridge
Date: 2/26/12

Had a cheap green fee coupon that was expiring so we headed down to Winfield to play. It was a touch cold and windy, but pretty nice for late February in Kansas. This was my first round with my new Taylormade Supertri. My shaft upgrade for it had not yet come in, so I was playing with a Stiff 60g Motore that was way too weak for me.
