Bio

Bio

I've been working at ALA since August 2006. I'm a passionate advocate for gaming in libraries so I've coordinated two Gaming, Learning, and Libraries symposia since that time. I'm also the primary staff person working on the implementation of the ALA Connect site.

On my own time, I run The Shifted Librarian blog. I also give presentations and have run workshops and classes. You can view slides from all of these on my Presentations wiki. My goal is to help libraries become more nimble to adapt to their users and not expect them to adapt to us. I believe Library 2.0 helps us do that.

In my former personal life, I ran the first library-related blog, The Librarians' Site du Jour, which lasted from 1995-1999.

Current Work
American Library Association (Other)
Strategy Guide
Chicago, IL, USA
2006 -
I'm the Strategy Guide for the American Library Association, which means I get to work on all kinds of cool web-related stuff. I coordinate our National Gaming Day initiative, and I'm the lead person for ALA Connect.

Past Work Experience
Suburban Library System (Library System)
Internet Development Specialist and Strategy Guide
Burr Ridge, IL
1997 - 2006
In this role, I helped member libraries of all types implement web-based services, highlighted emerging trends, taught librarians how to use various tools to connect with users and become more efficient themselves, and more. I also helped with the transition when the Suburban Library System (SLS) merged with the Chicago Metropolitan Library System (CMLS) in 2004 to become the Metropolitan Library System (MLS).

Grande Prairie Public Library District (Public Library)
Technology Coordinator
Hazel Crest, IL
1996 - 1997
In this position, I installed OPAC stations for the public to use, implemented dial-up internet access for the public, and started a community internet users group. We were the first public library in Chicago's south suburbs to offer public internet access.

Calumet City Public Library (Public Library)
Reference Librarian
Calumet City, IL
1992 - 1995
This was my first job out of library school. While my core role was to provide reference service, I also did reader's advisory, ran book discussions, created bibliographies and read-alike lists, managed the public computers, and helped bring email and the internet into the library.
