The Mummy (1999)

October 5, 2010

“Wildly amusing!” Sure, this film isn’t Citizen Kane or Gone with the Wind, but it’s one hell of a wild ride! This horror/comedy isn’t very satirical or symbolic: the residents of Perfection, Nevada, are being attacked by “Graboids,” which are humongous meat-eating worms that live underground, and everyone including Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward must destroy these beasts before they digest every single person in the town. I was very amused with this film: the special effects and the distinctive characters are what drives this one. Lots of high tension and black humor all around. It’s a definite cult classic.

Midnight Movie Perfectionspacer
Do you remember in the 70’s and 80’s those local UHF Ghost Host shows that would come on every Saturday night around Midnight? Elvira is the most famous I guess, but here in the Baltimore area we had Count Gore DeVol on channel 20, or the Ghost Host on channel 45. Every week you would be treated to great schlock like “Teenagers from Outer Space” or “Attack of the Killer Shrews”, and as I kid, I loved popping a big old bowl of popcorn and staying up into the wee hours watching these movies. Sadly, the days of the indy UHF stations are gone, and the Ghost Hosts are a thing of the past…but if they were still around, you can be sure “Tremors” would be in heavy rotation. This movie is just so much fun with a perfect blend of humor, action, and several pretty tense moments. Sure, “Tremors” screams B-MOVIE…and that is what is so great about it. “Tremors” doesn’t take itself too seriously…and neither should you. The movie unfolds and it’s a fun little ride, one that should be taken when the moon is out, when everyone else is in bed….and with a big old bowl of popcorn planted in your lap. …more info

Love this moviespacer
One of the best humorous scary monster movies of all time. I’ve watched it at least 8 times. Own it on VHS, then bought it on DVD. Highly recommend it for older teens and up. Memorable “F-bomb” language….more info
