Wintersmith

October 5, 2010

“Such a fun story!” Admittedly not as good as the last Wee Free Men book, but that would be had to do! This is a series that has split the sides of all ages in our family! Everyone insists on reading it together, and heaven help the person that reads ahead!

Product Description

At 9, Tiffany Aching defeated the cruel Queen of Fairyland. At 11, she battled an ancient body-stealing evil. At 13, Tiffany faces a new challenge: a boy. And boys can be a bit of a problem when you’re thirteen. . . But the Wintersmith isn’t exactly a boy. He is Winter itself — snow, gales, icicles — all of it. When he has a crush on Tiffany, he may make her roses out of ice, but his nature is blizzards and avalanches. And he wants Tiffany to stay in his gleaming, frozen world. Forever.

Tiffany will need all her cunning to make it to Spring. She’ll also need her friends, from junior witches to the legendary Granny Weatherwax

Crivens! Tiffany will need the Wee Free Men too! She’ll have the help of the bravest, toughest, smelliest pictsies ever to be banished from Fairyland — whether she wants it or not.

It’s going to be a cold, cold season, because if Tiffany doesn’t survive until Spring — Spring won’t come.

Like all of Terry Pratchetts’ books it was truly a joy to read. I have all of his books and I have enjoyed every one of them. This new character shows a promise of many adventures to come….more info

Will Spring ever return to Discworld?spacer
This book, third in the Tiffany Aching trilogy has got one of Discworld’s greatest young adult heroines AND some old favorites like the Nac Mac Feegle (the sheep-stealing, kilt-swinging little blue men), Granny Weatherwax, and Miss Tick, whose witch stealth-hat unfortunately misfires in the paranoid little village of Dogbend.

Tiffany Aching, a thirteen-year-old sheep-herder’s daughter, has apprenticed herself to a witch, who is sort of blind and deaf (however she can `borrow’ the eyes and ears of animals) and 113 years old. Tiffany quickly learns that Miss Treason’s best props (skulls, cobwebs, etc.) come out of a catalogue, and her broom has training wheels. She is probably the only witch still living who speaks of `the girl Weatherwax.’ Rumor has it that the clonking clock at her waist is really her heart. She is definitely spooky.

One evening in late Autumn, Miss Treason and her apprentice attend a Morris dance out in the woods.

Morris Dances are very strange, even under normal circumstances (only the British understand them), but when Tiffany jumps into the midst of this one, she jumps out again with a suitor–an Elemental called the Wintersmith.

One of the many things I like about Pratchett’s characters (the witches, at least) is that they take responsibility for their actions, even if they are only thirteen years old. They rarely use what S&S fantasies think of as `real magic.’ The best witches use psychology and props like pointy hats and fake cobwebs. Tiffany will need all of the psychological insight she can muster to keep the lovelorn Wintersmith at bay and somehow prevent him from freezing her beloved Chalk Downs into eternal winter.

Luckily (or not) she has the Nac Mac Feegle firmly at her side, and well-meaning advice on her unwanted suitor from everyone, including Anoia, Goddess of Things That Get Stuck in Drawers. Unluckily, the Wintersmith is carving her image on icebergs and sinking ships with them.

Will Spring ever return to Discworld?

“Wintersmith” is a sparkling continuation of the saga that started with “The Wee Free Men” and “A Hat Full of Sky.”

Awesome as always!spacer
Terry Pratchett is a comedic genius and this book is another fine example. It is a little bit dark for a “teen” book (I think they like it that way…witness the later Harry Potter books), but always ends well….more info
