Academic Centers

Center for Scholars

The Center for Scholars was established in 1997 to support the scholarly activities of Tulane faculty members. It supports faculty and departments that wish to bring distinguished visiting scholars to campus.

Middle American Research Institute

The Middle American Research Institute of Tulane University conducts, supports, and publishes research in the anthropology and especially the archaeology of Mexico and Central America. Its publications have ranged across the social sciences, natural sciences, and humanities. The institute provides instruction and research opportunities for graduate students in the Department of Anthropology and related disciplines at Tulane.

Murphy Institute of Political Economy

The Murphy Institute of Political Economy houses the undergraduate major in political economy and also serves as an international center for advanced research and scholarship by humanists and social scientists who study the interrelations of politics and economics. It houses the Center for Ethics and Public Affairs, which provides coordination and support for research, teaching and scholarly discussion of ethics, moral and political philosophy, and the ethical dimensions of public and professional life across academic disciplines and professional schools.

Payson Center for International Development

The Payson Center houses the undergraduate coordinate major in international development, as well as interdisciplinary M.S. and Ph.D. programs that link the social sciences with public health.

Stone Center for Latin American Studies

The Stone Center houses the undergraduate major in Latin American Studies as well as interdisciplinary M.A. and Ph.D. programs. Its core faculty of seventy Latin Americanists represents the largest contingent of faculty associated with any department or program at the university. Students and faculty benefit from the holdings of the Latin American library and a network of contacts with public officials, non-governmental organizations and academic leaders in Latin America.

Center for Inter-American Policy and Research

A cooperative effort of the Stone Center and the Centro de Investigación y Adiestramiento Político Administrativo (CIAPA) in San José, Costa Rica. CIPR is devoted to inter-hemispheric exchanges that will advance the production and dissemination of knowledge about critical policy issues facing the Americas as well as the deepening of academic research in these areas. Its aim is to stimulate contact between scholars and decision-makers working on the region at different locations and in different languages, enriching their production by enabling the confluence of multiple perspectives.

Cuban and Caribbean Studies Institute

The Cuban & Caribbean Studies Institute, a part of Tulane's Stone Center for Latin American Studies, and originally named the Cuban Studies Institute, evolved out of several years of sustained effort in developing relations with Cuban counterpart organizations for the purposes of academic collaboration and exchange, curricular development, cultural exchange and international development and dialogue. This organizational unit, officially established in 1997, has been responsible for the organization of a variety of lectures, performances, courses, symposia, etc. aimed at promoting a true academic and cultural exchange between Cuba and the United States.

New Orleans Center for the Gulf South

Focusing on New Orleans and the Gulf South region, the Center supports and sustains research, education, and community engagement. Its mission is to explore the region’s rich history and culture and to place the Gulf South in a larger national and international context.
