Microprose is back!

Originally started in 1982 by industry legends Sid Meier and Bill Stealey, Microprose became known throughout the video game industry as a cutting edge computer game designer and publisher. Focusing primarily on high tech military and strategy simulations, the company eventually merged with Spectrum HoloByte by the 1990s. After going through a series of further changes in ownership, the name and its legacy was wiped out by Infogrames in 2001.

This past Fall, Microprose was acquired by a team of video game industry veterans. Busily working all this time laying a solid operating foundation, Microprose is now ready to launch again! Choosing to start where the previous incarnations legend left off, Microprose has decided to go right in to the high tech arena again with an exciting product line meant to promote high visibility of the Microprose name.

Microproses key products for its launch are all hardware based, grouped in easy to identify categories: CONNECT Series products, Game Controller products, POWERLINE Battery products, and REDLINE Cabling products.

The CONNECT Series products consist of some state of the art equipment thats beneficial to the general electronics consumer as well as gamers. Starting on Feb. 17th, 2009, all broadcast signals will be digital only. What this means is that over 24 million households will lose service unless they have some sort of device to covert the signal to one that analog TVs can understand. For those without expensive digital cable or satellite services, that leaves them with one option the standardized Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) receiver. Microproses own ATSC Digital Television Receiver, the MPI-500, is an affordable solution for consumers, with a $69 price point (not including the $40 voucher that the government will be providing consumers to cover the mandatory changeover). Its designed to deliver DVD-quality digital broadcast images even on older analog TVs, and includes advanced features such as a digital on-screen TV programming guide. Receiving many more programs then before through "multicast" channels.

In addition to V-Chip parental control, the box provides advanced digital closed captions, including the capability to choose from multiple type fonts, sizes, colors, backgrounds and more. The remote control includes a "cc" button for easy caption access. Other features include an all-format ATSC receiver, flexible 4:3 and 16:9 display formats, PSIP processing, channel 2-69 tuning, RF input and RF output, and composite (RCA jacks) video and left-right stereo TV audio outputs.

Microproses other CONNECT Series product is a stylish 3 port HDMI 1.3a certified hub. 1.3a certification means the hub can support all the latest HDMI outputs, which include over one billion colors, automatic audio syncing, Dobly TrueHD (HD-DVD) and DTS-HD Master Audio (Blu-Ray) streams. With more and more devices in your entertainment center supporting HDMI output yet most TVs only including one HDMI input, an HDMI hub is becoming a necessity. Microproses hub allows any 3 HDMI devices to connect to your LCD, DLP or Plasma television.

Microproses REDLINE Cabling Series forms a perfect complement to the CONNECT Series of devices, as well as providing high quality connections for demanding gamers. The series gets its name from the Microprose signature red coloring, which immediately stands out to the naked eye.

At the top of their series is their 12 foot HDMI cable, which is 1.3 certified, gold plated, and supports up to 1080p video. Next are their HDTV component cables for the PS2/PS3, Xbox and Xbox 360. At 9 feet in length, they come standard with gold plated connectors, and industrial metal sheathing with integrated ferrite cores, which means they deliver low degradation and high quality audio and video connections. Their PS2/PS3 and Xbox 360 AV/S-Video cables use the same high quality construction, for those with televisions that only support these more modest input standards. Rounding up the line is their Sony PSP compatible USB 2.0 Data and Power Link cable, held to the same high standards.

The POWERLINE Series are rechargeable batteries with integrated stands that are designed for use with the Sony PSP. The Lithium ion batteries latch directly on to the PSP, and do not require removal of the expansion pack to recharge the PSPs internal battery. Both the POWERLINE expansion pack and the internal battery recharge through the regular PSP External Charge Pack, which connects through a port on the back of the expansion pack. The batteries come in both 5 and 10 hour expansion models.

The last launch product will be of great appeal to gamers everywhere. The Microprose Arcade Professional (MPPC-AP01) is designed to support the large casual and retro gamer market. The usb based controller features an 8 way digital stick reminiscent of the Atari 2600s joystick design, and a 2 mode 360 degree analog trackball. The standard action buttons are laid out in a spread palm format instead of the normal diamond shape, allowing quick access support for combinations in many of the classic fighting games on your favorite PC, Mac, and Linux based emulator.

Of special note of all Microprose products, is that they are all Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) compliant and contain no lead. This directive restricts the use of six hazardous materials in the manufacture of various types of electronic and electrical equipment, and protects both the manufacturers employees from exposure to hazardous materials and the planets exposure.

With the strong initial product lineup in the high volume cabling, battery and controller markets, Microprose is positioning itself for a solid base of income from which to grow. The CONNECT Series products also position Microprose to make a name for itself in the ever growing home entertainment/theatre market. A wise move, as gaming systems like the Xbox 360 and PS3 continue to blur the line between the traditional gaming industry and the home theatre industry. Microprose appears to want to make its return to the industry a permanent one. If the thought that went in to the current lineup is any indication, and solid updates to its classic game properties are to follow as stated, then Microprose is certainly in for the long haul.
