Fountain Studios in Crown Heights, Brooklyn
Fountain Studios is curated and directed by husband and wife team Troy Hagenbart and Susan Gargulio. Since it opened in 2008, Fountain has exhibited a large number of emerging artists, oftentimes as two person shows that spin contrasting bodies of work into unexpected dialogue, drawing parallels between installation, experimental music, photography, painting, and sculpture. Slowly shifting its mission (and possibly name) to include more conceptually oriented exhibits, I am looking out for upcoming delights.

Yola Monakhov’s Empire Pictures photo essay
Yola Monakhov’s project Empire Pictures weaves together images loosely connected to the Hudson River and her depictions of people leave me stunned. This photographer’s heightened interest in and sensitivity to the lives of others give her subjects dignity and importance. Strangers she has met in passing seem to be sharing openly with her camera what we are too shy to admit to ourselves. Somehow, they are as curious about her as she is about them. Read more
Gerry Badger: The Pleasures of Good Photographs
Gerry Badger titled his ">collection of essays on photography after Lee Friedlander, who once said: ‘the pleasures of good photographs are the pleasures of good photographs’. With accessible and vivacious writing, Badger makes seemingly simple claims that quickly become layered and profound. He is open-minded yet opinionated, slightly cynical, and deeply, infectiously infatuated with the medium. Reading this book and sharing it with students is indeed a pleasure. It makes sense that Badger was the 2011 winner of the Infinity Award in Writing.
Poignant Mexican love ballad by Trío Los Panchos
Trío Los Panchos can make a desert weep. Spinning Mexican love ballads and boleros back in the 50s and 60s, they were at their ultimate best when American songbird Eydie Gorme came on board. Their intoxicating, syrupy sounds will wrap you in a warm embrace and send you waltzing with the lamp posts.

WE'RE WATCHING
Peter Nalitch is Russia’s answer to Manu Chao. His video for the song Guitar is a Borat-like jab at low-budget, post-Soviet awkwardness — absurd English lyrics, Eurotrash earnestness, bad wipes, and cheap subtitles. But its tongue-in-cheekness is quite apparent, and the song is disarmingly catchy and romantic.

The Sound of Animals Fighting again unleash their experimental blend of progressive electronic hardcore rock. Known only by their animal names — Nightingale, Walrus, Lynx, and Skunk — and wearing masks for their rare live appearances, TSOAF have released two albums. Their latest, The Ocean and The Sun, offers an intense mix of genres, as delicate Brazilian-inflected melodies careen into shattering guitar workouts.
