Shoji earns 1,100th victory of career at UC-Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – Head coach Dave Shoji won his 1,100 th career match and the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team swept UC Davis 25-17, 25-23, 25-17 on Saturday night at The Pavilion. The 'Bows improve to 24-2 overall and 16-0 in the Big West Conference, and finish the regular season with an undefeated road record. Outside of a late second-set rally by the Aggies, it was a dominant performance by Hawai'i. The 'Bows were efficient on offense, hitting .324 for the match compared to UC Davis's .170 attack percentage. Jane Croson and Emily Hartong both had 12 kills for Hawai'i, with Hartong adding 15 digs. Mita Uiato recorded a season-high six blocks and Stephanie Hagins hit a team season-best .857 (6-0-7) in her first career start for the Rainbow Wahine. Devon Damelio had a match-high 13 kills and Caroline Mercado posted 15 digs for UC Davis, who fell to 16-14 overall and 10-7 in conference. The 'Bows took an early lead in the opening set on their way to a comfortable 25-17 win. Jane Croson put down six kills in the opening frame and Hagins added four more.  A pair of kills by Allison Whitson (10 kills, 7 digs) cut the lead to 14-10, but a 6-2 Hawai'i run increased the lead to eight points. Jade Vorster (8 kills, 4 blocks) put her stamp on set two early and often. She buried UH's first four kills and helped her team to an early 9-2 lead. Whitson had a pair of kills to help the Aggies cut into the lead, but after a Croson kill the 'Bows led 22-17 and were poised to close out the match. UCD rallied to tie the set at 23-23, but a pair of Hartong kills ended the threat. Hawai'i returns home to play its final regular season matches. The 'Bows will host Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday, Nov. 21 and UC Riverside on Friday, Nov. 23.

Lunas will try to dethrone division II behemouth 'Iolani

With all of the clamouring for a move up to division I, 'Iolani has a step to overcome first. The Lunas of Lahainaluna will make sure they are something more than a step, as they will try to contain the juggernaut that the Raiders have become. After a 43-0 thrashing of OIA White division champion Radford, the Red Raiders will go for a fifth-straight title defense on Friday afternoon. The Raiders have dominated ILH division II as well as the HHSAA playoffs throughout the last decade, winning 6 of the last 7 state titles, as well as playing in 8 of the last 10 title games. Quarterback Reece Foy and wide reciever Tanner Nishioka connected for 125 yards and a touchdown Friday. The Raiders' wingman finished with 215 yards and 4 touchdowns, prompting a running mercy-rule clock by the beginning of the second half. The Raiders will now turn their attention to the Lunas' defense, one of the stingiest in the land. The Lunas have proven they belong all season, sporting a 9-1 record that includes the hide of division I state tournament contender Baldwin. The Lunas countered their way past cinderella story Nanakuli today 28-0, notching their 7th shutout of the season. The westside boys churned 164 yards on 42 carries. Lunas' defense put the team on it's back, holding the 'Hawks to -7 yards rushing. DB Tytus Lucas added a 34-yard pick six to seal the game with a 21 point lead. Reece Foy, Tanner Nishioka, and 'Iolani will seek a sixth consecutive championship, while the Lunas will look for Maui's second. Foy and the high-powered 'Iolani offense will see if they can pass the test of the dominant Luna defense. Someone will have to blink first with a title on the line Friday afternoon.

Night of Upsets in BCS sends Manti Te'o & Irish to driver's seat

By RALPH D. RUSSO AP College Football Writer       Coming into Saturday, Oregon and Kansas State had the inside track to college football's national championship and the Southeastern Conference's run of six straight BCS titles was in jeopardy.         Then No. 2 K-State got thumped 52-24 by unranked Baylor and top-ranked Oregon fell in overtime to No. 14 Stanford, 17-14.         Now the SEC is alive and well.         And how's this for a possible national title game: Alabama vs. Notre Dame.         A week after Alabama was upset by Texas A&M, the upsets re-opened door for the fourth-ranked Crimson Tide, which shut out lower-division Western Carolina 49-0. Georgia has a title shot, too. And so does Florida.         But the happiest of all about the Ducks and Wildcats going down had to be Notre Dame and its fans.         The Fighting Irish were third in the BCS standings, behind K-State and Oregon entering the weekend. Notre Dame was staring at what must have felt unthinkable for the storied program: Finishing unbeaten and not even getting a chance to play for the BCS championship.

Coast Guard: Body found near burned Gulf oil rig

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Authorities say that divers hired by the owner of an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico that caught fire on Friday have recovered a body near the site. Coast Guard spokesman Carlos Vega said the unidentified person was found Saturday evening by divers hired by Houston-based Black Elk Energy who were inspecting the platform. Vega said the Coast Guard was turning over the remains to local authorities. The news came shortly after the Coast Guard suspended a 32-hour-long search for two workers missing after the fire erupted. The search covered a 1,400-square-foot area. Vega said the Guard could resume the search if there is credible evidence that one of the workers survived. Four other workers who were severely burned remained at Baton Rouge General Medical Center on Saturday night. AP-WF-11-18-12 0548GMT

Mariota and Ducks fall to Stanford in OT

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Jordan Williamson hit a 37-yard field goal in overtime and No. 14 Stanford upset No. 1 Oregon 17-14, denying the Ducks a chance to clinch the Pac-12 North and derailing their straight shot at the BCS championship game. If both Stanford and Oregon finish with wins in their final games next weekend, both will finish with one conference loss, which means Stanford will win the head-to-head matchup and go to the Pac-12 championship game for a chance to play in the Rose Bowl. Stanford (9-2, 7-1) will visit No. 1UCLA, which defeated No. 21 USC 32-29 earlier in the day to claim the Pac-12 South. Oregon (10-1, 7-1) will play rival Oregon State in the annual Civil War rivalry game in Corvallis. The loss snapped a 13-game winning streak for the Ducks, which was longest current streak in the nation. It was Stanford's fifth straight win. Oregon was the only Pac-12 team that Stanford hadn't defeated over the past two seasons.

Thousands celebrate Thanksgiving early

The U.S. Vets Center in Kalaeloa was filled with many homeless veterans enjoying live entertainment and a hot thanksgiving meal. For Kevin Merk, since his family lives in Connecticut, this may be the only turkey he'll be eating for thanksgiving. "Having everybody show their gratitude towards what we did and what everyone else in the program did just seeing all the humbleness," says Kevin Merk, U.S. Army veteran. And, the response of appreciation towards those who volunteer from ko olina and the rotary club of kapolei doesn't go unnoticed. "They're very grateful for all that we've been able to do for them we very much appreciate this opportunity to do that," says Bill Quiseng, Ko Olina Beach Club resort manager. "They're always grateful that they're thought of but you know there are heroes and they've sacrificed so much and it's the least we can do," says Lajoy Hanohano, Rotary Club of Kapolei. For hundreds at Lighthouse Outreach Center in Waipahu, its been an on-going six year tradition of partnering up wtih Ko Olina to celebrate the holidays early. Pastor Joe Hunkin says he loves seeing the smiling faces of those less fortunate after they receive free food. He says, Ko Olina also helps their community in different ways throughout the year. "We have a shelter here and when the people get a place we have free bed, free sofa and free furniture donated to us and we give it to the people in the shelter," says Pastor Hunkin. And, the message of giving back is being passed on to the younger generation... "Those kids they love to do that and they work they love to volunteer. Main thing I know is giving out to the people don't worry about they don't give to you but he will open doors not just money but the blessings will come in a different ways," says Pastor Hunkin. The Hawaii Food bank says there is no shortage of need in the community, so food and or monetary donations are always welcome. For more information visit: www.hawaiifoodbank.org
