Licensing

So in case you’ve been living under a rock and didn’t notice from the bombardment of e-mails, newsletters, facebook updates, tweets, newspaper articles, messenger pigeons, and skyword banners… PBR10 was held from September 27th to 29th!!

To kick things off we decided to have an in-office party with bands, friends and favourite people dropping in to say hi, drink responsibly-ish, and reminisce about our time together over the years! We want to thank everyone who managed to drop by the office and offer their well wishes and congratulations, gotta say that we work with some awesome people and couldn’t ask for a better team.

The office was constantly buzzing with energy as all the bands were arriving in Toronto and checking into their hotels, or trying to at least. On Thursday morning we were greeted with a visit from a few members from our favourite Vancouver band, You Say Party. Once settled, YSP bassist Stephen O’Shea told us about how he came across a recent episode of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno which featured an interview with Richard Gere who was promoting his new film Arbitrage. He mentioned that while he was watching Jay Leno make the introduction to the audience and invite Richard Gere to come out, The Tonight Show band kicked off a big-band rendition of You Say Party’s “Laura Palmer’s Prom”. Needless to say minds were blown! Check it out here… starts at around 1:28.

For the PBR Licensing Team, its stuff like this that excites us and makes us love the job. Supporting great Canadian bands by helping to place their music in major motion pictures and enjoying side uses like this just shows us that there will always be a need for awesome indie music. Thanks to Stephen of YSP for telling us about it and thanks to The Tonight Show band for paying tribute!

TIFF’s Festival Music House(FMH) brought out the likes of music supervisors Andrea Von Foerster (Firestarter), Toddrick Spalding (High Bias), David Taylor (TBWA/Media Arts Lab), Susan Dolan (HUM), as well as Zync co-founders (and friends of PBR) Marisa Baldi and Sanne Haggleston. These synch heavyweights joined many of us industry folk at this year’s FMH curated by Arts & Crafts and held at the MOD Club.

We sent PS I Love You to take the stage as part of the Sept 11^th showcase along with Dan Mangan, Yukon Blonde, and Hey Ocean. The idea was to turn a few heads and get the music supervisors talking about our boys Paul and Benjamin, and they delivered. Having seen PS I Love You perform a number of times as part of my job, I say without hesitation that that was the best PS I Love You show I’ve ever seen!

Each time I see these guys hit the stage, I’m reminded of how far they’ve come; the crowds get larger (which is a pain in the ass when I have to go through the crowd to get to the bar), way more energetic, and a hell of a lot louder.

We’re damn proud of these guys and can’t wait to see what they’ll do next. By the way, have you heard their cover of Ziggy Stardust’s “Moonage Daydream”? I still can’t believe I’m listening to Benjamin (drummer) singing David Bowie’s lyrics, goddamn!

All in all, FMH was a success. Big thanks to Arts & Crafts for doing a swell job hosting a great industry event that gives us another way to connect with music supervisors and try to land placements in film, tv, advertising, and interactive media… plus it was an open bar. Already looking forward to next year.

We’re proud to welcome you to our new and improved licensing site! What was first just a license request page has now transformed into a full fledged music licensing website. Now you’re able to enjoy videos of some of our recent placements in Film, TV, Advertising, and Interactive Media. Users also have the ability to search our catalogue by artist, keyword, and emotional tag… we might even be the first independent record label to do this. We’re also sharing our industry newsletters (minus download links, sorry) and will begin posting regular blog entries about general stuff happening that interests our licensing personel.

Our goal is to provide the best licensing support to our artists and this new website enables us to do just that. So please have a look around and enjoy your experience!
