About

I’ve been a geek for nearly half of my half-century-plus. That geekdom has included computers as far back as the Atari 1040ST, operating systems from Linux to OSX, and, always, a full range of gadgets. Now, I’m just a longtime Linux user who’s come over to the world of Apple.

To put food on the table, I’m a Systems Engineer with a major aviation communications company, where “systems” is in the real sense of the word: integrating discrete avionics components into a coherent whole.

I’m a sometime technical writer, including books and articles. I even had a stint writing a daily Linux newsletter for a famous gnome. I may write again, even though there’s really no money in it.

I’m an inveterate baseball fan, particularly when it comes to my St. Louis Cardinals. I think of the months between the end of the World Series and the start of spring training as “the dark months.”

I’m also a huge blues fan. In the early days of podcasting, I started a blues podcast called The Roadhouse. It was the first blues podcast to start as a podcast, rather than migrating over from terrestrial or web radio. Every week since early 2005, I’ve delivered hundreds of hours of blues to thousands of regular listeners. I’ve also expanded into several radio stations in the US and Canada and, of course, into social media.

I’m also interested in running and fitness. I suppose I needed to be, after 33 years of smoking and a sedentary lifestyle. I’m not out breaking records or even competing, but I’ve become much more dedicated to my own health in the past few years.

Those are the pieces that comprise “A Penguin in the Orchard:” – baseball, blues, gadgets, and technology, in any order you prefer.
