Even if you know where you're going and how to get there, HopStop it first. (Yes, I just verbed a noun. So sue me.)

The reason is that you get a pretty good travel-time approximation. Every time I use it, it's pretty close, if not right on the money.

As I get woozy when I go below 14th Street, this is a lifesaver.

I have a love/hate relationship with good ole Hopstop.  When you're on a wifi/LAN line network, it's always good.  But, when you're out and about on your phone, some times it doesn't want to work on your 3 or 4G service.  It requires wifi.  Other times, it works.  I've personally grown to prefer the using the Maps app on my phone as it gives equally accurate directions, always works on a 3 or 4G service, and easily works with your gps for help when walking in/to unknown territory.  I still lip Hopstop...it's just not my favorite kid anymore ;-)

I don't know how I would have found my way around NYC without this app.

There's a few apps that you NEED in NYC:

YELP - helps you find reviews, address and cross streets.  Plus has the kick arse augmented reality monocle feature.  If you haven't tired it, you must!  It's like around me, but in 3D.

    AND

HOPSTOP - for subway and walking directions

How did we get around before YELP and HOPSTOP?

Listed in: Trains, Plains, (Cruises), &…
