Bavarian Beerhouse

Missed Oktoberfest? Never fear: this place is open ALL YEAR!

Review

If you missed Oktoberfest this year, don't worry too much because the Bavarian Beerhouse is open all year, offering a constant beer-festival revelry in an authentic beer hall atmosphere. While dancing on the benches and trying to finish your first stein - that's two pints - before everyone else in you party is not compulsory, it certainly sets the right mood.

Every day at the Bavarian Beerhouse, in Old Street or Tower Hill, is a celebration of everything cheery, good-natured and fun. Or was that supposed to be beery? Itchy recommends you stick to the delicious Kaltenberg, or Erdinger if you prefer variety, but the option for a glass of wine (which looks very odd on the giant hall tables) or, much later in the evening, a shot of Porno Brause. That's vodka and sherbet and is much harder to drink than it sounds. If you're there as part of a big party - and that is the best way to do it - then order a Jägertrain of 10 Jäger shots in a line that drop into glasses of Red Bull like dominoes...

It's tempting to order the giggle-worthy Schnitzel - yep, that's a real thing. Thought hat really is the best option, it's worth taking a look at the rest of the menu as we enjoyed the Leberkäse (meatloaf) and Wurstplatte (sausage platter) that really helped cushion the blow of those later Porno Brause (don't ask). Though you may come for the German beers, you'll be really grateful for the food. It could be called plain but that may be because you've already deadened some of those taste buds with giant vats of beer. It really is tasty, as well as filling. Itchy's Oktoberfest-friend insisted we quote them about their Käseknacker (cheese cracker), because they... "can't tell you which came first - the stuffed crust pizza or the stuffed sausage - but I can tell you that the cheesy goodness that provocatively oozes from this sausage [Steady! - ed] had my knees positively quivering with joy."

Once you've polished off your Fleischpflanzerl (giant meatball) or other dish then you're back on the beer and snuff. It's not every day that an Oompah band offers you a clothes peg with snuff on but quite a lot of patrons seem to be up for trying it - even if it did mean wandering around with a brown nose while their friends mysteriously sniggered. We're not convinced that happens at every Oktoberfest around the world but it certainly added a confused and amusing air to this one.

If you like throwing a party, without organising anything yourself, that everyone will enjoy then this is a good all-round option to take people to. Seats for the beer hall downstairs really need to be booked online first and work out at between £15 and £40, depending on how big a Bavarian-themed night you desire - based on Oktoberfest prices, look online for their Christmas and NYE events. If you're going as a small get together or reunion, rather than a big party, then take a look at the Monday and Tuesday special offers, as you'll save a bit and be able to stay the night and enjoy yourself.

If you've made a booking and want to keep up with their social media then like them on Facebook and follow them on twitter at @BavarianBeerUK. Check out some more videos on their YouTube Channel... Prost!
