Welcome to the Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences at RIT! The Golisano College consists of five departments as well as the Ph.D. in Computing and Information Sciences program—the research arm of the College—and offers 16 programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, along with nine minors from which to choose. This mixture of applied computing disciplines is unique and allows the College to offer a strong, diverse series of programs centered around computing, from infrastructure to the end user. Our commitment to producing the next generation of computer professionals and innovators has forged a great and unique integrative college that is quickly becoming the computing school of choice. Computer Science

I knew I was headed for a career in computer science when I got my first computer as a kid. I found it empowering. Computer science gives you the tools to solve problems. Take what you imagine and build it. That's computer science.

Computer science (CS) pushes the boundary of technology. It's always changing. It's first and foremost a science.  The CS program has taught me more than just how to program computers. I’ve learned how to approach computing problems from the perspective of a scientist and discovered new solutions to challenging problems in the computer lab. I'm passionate about helping people. No one goes into writing programs for themselves. I'm really excited about being one of those people testing the limits.

I feel well prepared for a career in any direction with my CS degree, including artificial intelligence, computer graphics, interface design, and more!

Information Sciences and Technologies

Hey! I'm a third-year student in the Department of Information Sciences and Technologies studying medical informatics. I chose medical informatics because it lets me utilize computer technology with my interest in health care. And it doesn't hurt that careers in medical informatics will provide hot jobs in the next decade. President Obama has said that technology will play a major role in the new administration. And he's made it clear that medical information technology will play a central role in his plan to overhaul the health system. Employment in occupations related to health care is projected to increase in coming years and its growth is expected to be driven by technological advances in patient care.

Learn more about medical informatics (and information technology—the other program) in the Department of Information Sciences and Technologies and how it's preparing me... and how it can prepare you!

Interactive Games and Media

I like to draw, but I also like computers. So, when I heard about the new media interactive development program (one of two programs in the Department of Interactive Games and Media), I knew it was right for me.  I work closely in teams with students from the new media design and imaging program (from the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences). We work on graphic design, photographic imaging, video, publishing, programming, website design and development, and interactive games and media.

All of these skills enhance my love of design and creating worlds. As we say in the department, "What world will you create?"

There are two programs—new media interactive development and game design & development—in the Department of Interactive Games and Media. Learn more about the worlds my classmates and I are creating.

Networking, Security, and Systems Administration

With my interest in network and computer security—and with the increase of U.S. government computer systems being attacked or scanned millions of times a day—I felt a degree in the information security and forensics (ISF) program was for me. ISF, one of two programs in the Department of Networking, Security, and Information Sciences, will prepare me to identify computer security vulnerabilities and the detection of computer security exploits. President Obama has declared that cyber security is a priority, and with the announcement of a security czar, there will always be a need for those who can protect the integrity of cyberspace, both in public and private sectors.

Learn more about the applied networking and system administration (ANSA) program—the other undergraduate program—minors, and graduate programs that the Department of Networking, Security, and Systems Administration offers.

Software Engineering

spacer

As a student in the Software Engineering department, I've always been interested in technology and the way it impacts our lives on a daily basis. Software is everywhere, and the Software Engineering program gives me the opportunity to create high-quality software for a broad range of industries and fields.

Software engineering is far more than writing and debugging code. My coursework immerses me in the entire software development lifecycle, from interacting with customers and end-users in determining project requirements all the way to the design, development, and maintenance of software applications. My co-op experiences (including a summer at Microsoft!) have reinforced this and have provided me with valuable industry experience.

Learn how software engineering can prepare you for a career as a software engineer, too!

Doctor of Philosophy

With the never-ending changes in computing technology, I want to help lead the way to a more efficient world. My thirst for knowledge and learning led me to the Ph.D. program here at Golisano College. I chose Golisano College because it encourages use-inspired research and is designed to produce cutting-edge researchers, like me, to excel in interdisciplinary environments and industries. The breadth that the program offers and its scholarly focus are unique characteristics of the program. My teammates are enthusiastic about my research and the faculty and staff inspire us to push the horizon and drive our research to other domains. Important work has been done here and has been published in leading research journals in the fields and widely disseminated throughout the world... and I want to be a part of that change!

If you're as excited as I am about the possibilities and how you can contribute, learn more about how you can become a part of this great team!
