Eyebeam Statement on Hurricane Sandy

October 30, 2012, 4PM

Eyebeam will be closed for the rest of the week due to damages sustained from Hurricane Sandy and the unprecedented water surge that resulted. Since this past Friday, Eyebeam staff members have taken every precaution possible to prepare for the storm, but Hurricane Sandy was beyond anyone’s expectations. We are working quickly to assess and rectify the damage, and hope to have the space fully operational as soon as possible.

All programs and events scheduled for the week of November 5 will be postponed, notably those that are part of F.A.T. GOLD: Five Years of Free Art & Technology, the exhibition and event series celebrating the work of the Free Art & Technology Lab. This program will be rescheduled for March 2013. We appreciate everyone’s support and patience during this time.

UPDATE: November 1, 2012

After assessing the damage, it's clear that it is significant. We're in the process of rebuilding the space from water damage resulting from a surge of up to 3 feet. Most important at the moment: we are seeking expert help in maintaining our archive in multiple media formats. If you have technical expertise in this area, please call Marko: (646) 284-4187.

Additionally, we will be seeking volunteer help in re-installing the technical infrastructure beginning next week, November 5.

THANK YOU for all of your support and well-wishes.

UPDATE: November 2, 2012

The space looks MUCH better today and there is a feeling of optimism. Archive recovery volunteers are doing amazing work in salvaging the media and the space is nearing completion of phase one cleaning. Now on to finalizing that work and then moving on to rebuilding. We hope to have power turned back on to building Sunday afternoon.

UPDATE: November 8, 2012

The support from the community has been incredible, thank you to everyone who is helping with this rebuilding effort. We have decided to remain closed to the public throughout the rest of the month due to the necessity for full access to our space for cleaning and revitalizing damaged equipment and supplies. The archive recovery effort has been a huge success so far and we will update everyone of its progress as we continue. We feel that though this storm caused major damage it is an opportunity for us to rebuild stronger than ever and that is what we plan to do. As throughout this effort, if you would like to volunteer with technical equipment recovery, please call Marko: (646) 284-4187.
