About Us

The purpose of the Maritime Foundation is to promote awareness of Britain’s dependence on the sea. Once almost every British household had some link with the sea. By the 1980s that was already becoming a distant memory, and today only about five per cent of the population is directly involved with maritime activities. Yet we depend on the sea more than ever.

Media Awards

In 1995, in memory of the former naval correspondent of The Daily Telegraph, the Foundation initiated the Desmond Wettern Media Award to give recognition to those journalists who do most to create public awareness of maritime matters.

Memorial Book

In 1987, the Maritime Foundation initiated a Memorial Book for ‘Those Lost at Sea with No Known Grave’, which is kept in the Mariners’ Chapel at All Hallows by The Tower to record their names and circumstances of their deaths.

The Maritime Foundation is a registered charity

which promotes Britain’s interests across the entire maritime sector.
