Mountbatten Maritime Award

spacer For Best Literary Contribution

The Mountbatten Maritime Award is made to the person who, in the opinion of the Awards Committee, is the author of the work of literature, published during the qualifying period, that contributes most significantly to public awareness of maritime issues.

Whether the winning entry is a true story based on verifiable fact or a realistic work of fiction, it must

  • demonstrate a true understanding of the maritime subject; and
  • accurately portray the influence of the sea in the story.

The writing may take the form of

  • a significant poem with a maritime dimension;
  • a work with a ‘technical’ theme describing a scientific, economic, biological, oceanographic, social, legal, administrative, industrial or defence aspect of maritime endeavour;
  • a biography of an individual whose life and work influence the maritime scene today; or
  • a work of prose fiction with a contemporary maritime theme.

The prize is an engraved silver Armada Plate.
