NGINX highlights
NGINX became a standard tool to build fast, scalable web sites. Run by 12% of all Internet domains, NGINX is high performance web server and web accelerator. NGINX features include: static content streaming; reverse proxy for HTTP, SMTP, IMAP and POP3; Layer 7 load balancing; application request routing; cache engine; bandwidth and request control; and SSL termination.
NGINX support for FastCGI, uwsgi and SCGI protocols allows to host popular applications like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, as well as application frameworks like Rails, Django or Zend, on the same server or over the network for improved performance and greater scalability. Substituting or complementing legacy Apache/mod_php configurations with NGINX and PHP-FPM setup often enables to easily scale up a web site without unnecessary hardware purchases. NGINX is also being frequently used as a frontend for Node.js applications.
Because of its compact and predictable memory and CPU usage, NGINX is ubiquitous on dedicated and virtual private servers (VPS), as well as in cloud environments, e.g. serving over 40% of web sites hosted on Amazon's AWS.
NGINX is a key software component of web architectures at Netflix, Pinterest, CloudFlare, Airbnb, WordPress.com, GitHub, SoundCloud, Foursquare, Zynga, Eventbrite, NASA/JPL, Amazon, Zappos, Media Temple, Heroku, RightScale, Engine Yard, ZenDesk and many other companies. It is also used by such vendors as VMware, TrendMicro, IBM, RIM as part of their hugely successful commercial products.
NGINX is available for Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, Windows, and other modern operating systems.
