Il est indéniable que certains DJs jouissent d’un statut particulier aux yeux des amateurs de musique électronique, et ce sans qu’on puisse vraiment expliquer pourquoi… Leur technique, leurs sélections et leur charisme en font des personnalités à part, des « DJs de DJs » comme on dit, ceux qui ont acquis une sorte d’aura très spéciale sans être extrêmement célèbres pour autant. Matthew Styles fait clairement partie de ce cercle très fermé de DJs et producteurs (de même que Craig Richards ou Bill Patrick à mon sens), tant son travail et son éthique paraissent exemplaires.
Matthew se prend rapidement de passion pour le mix, grâce à un père DJ de profession qui lui transmettra son savoir et son amour de la musique dès le plus jeune âge. Après quelques années d’entraînement intensif, il se lance dans le grand bain et se fait vite un nom sur la scène londonienne, notamment grâce aux afters « Dig Your Own Rave » du T-Bar qui lui permettent de mettre au point son style de mix et les sélections qui ont fait sa renommée. Il fait alors la connaissance de Damian Lazarus et le rejoindra aux commandes de Crosstown Rebels aux tous débuts du label, avant de quitter Londres pour Berlin en compagnie de sa moitié Dinky. Il abandonne ensuite son job chez Crosstown pour se concentrer sur la prod et le DJing, et devient rapidement un invité régulier du Panorama Bar ou encore du Fabric. Après des sorties au compte-gouttes sur BPitch et Horizontal, il signe une poignée de tracks house très remarqués sur Ostgut Ton et Running Back, dont l’incroyable Liquid Sky compilé par Nick Höppner dans son mix Panorama Bar 04.

Matthew vient tout juste de sortir son nouveau maxi Aji-No-Moto sur Running Back, et si vous ne connaissiez pas sa musique voici un extrait de son tout premier live set qu’il n’a encore jamais joué en public, une superbe sélection de prods sorties ou à sortir qui vous donnera un aperçu de ce qu’il mijote actuellement en studio.

It is undeniable that some DJs have a particular status in the eyes of electronic music lovers, even if there is no real explanation to this fact. Their technique, their music selections and charisma make them kind of special, so that they are often called « DJs’ DJs », those who have acquired a very special kind of aura without even being that famous. Matthew Styles is clearly part of this superior race of DJs and producers (as Craig Richards or Bill Patrick in my opinion), as both his work and ethics seem to be exemplary.
Matthew discovered DJing and electronic music early in his life, thanks to his father who was a DJ himself and transmitted his knowledge and love of music to him from an early age. After working a bit on his mixing skills, Matthew started DJing in London and quickly made a name for himself in the capital’s club scene, notably thanks to the famous Dig Your Own Rave afterparties at the T-Bar which allowed him to develop the mixing style that made his reputation. Then, he met Damian Lazarus and joined him at the head of Crosstown Rebels in the early days of the label, before leaving London and moving to Berlin with his girl Dinky. He then left his job at Crosstown to concentrate on DJing and production, and quickly became a regular guest at clubs such as Panorama Bar or Fabric. Following a few quality releases on BPitch Control and Horizontal, he then dropped a handful of highly acclaimed house tracks on Ostgut Ton and Running Back, including the incredible Liquid Sky compiled by Nick Höppner in his Panorama Bar 04 mix.
