I am adding this graphic that says: “Please Take the LinkedIn Survey” so I can pin it on Pinterest in the hopes of using that social media platform to get a few more votes on this survey. Also, I can add the image to Facebook and maybe get a few more votes from there as well. A test in the use of imagery on social media platforms!

I hope that helped — should I ask FB friends to take this?

      Debbie,

Yes, please ask your FB friends to take the survey! Also, I am particularly interested in LinkedIn success stories or in how people have found LinkedIn to be useful.

      Thanks so much,

    Hi Leora,

I have been a member of LinkedIn for quite some time. Unfortunately, I have never taken the time to find out what LinkedIn is all about. Maybe you’ll write a post or two describing the benefits of being active on LinkedIn. Let me know if you do!

      Jamella,

Oh, you would make a perfect audience member! Post on LinkedIn will be in about two weeks. Meanwhile, my suggestion is join a group or two (either one in your area or one in your profession or both) and in some way participate – ask a question or provide an answer.

I do have a linkedIn profile, but do not use it for any business promotions except of course I use it for sharing my posts.

I also do not participate yet in any of the linked groups there though i think i should start doing that now. Thanks for sharing this.

      Praveen,

A social media friend taught me a while back that the groups are the way to connect on LinkedIn. Some are definitely better than others. If you do poke around in groups, I’m wondering if you will find good ways for bloggers? My favorites are for WordPress: WordPress Experts and WordPress Designers. Lots of talented people sharing ideas and suggestions.

Groups have been extremely helpful to me. I’ve been able to find clients on Linkedin as well as professionals in my field I can relate to. Working at home as a freelance writer can get lonely from time to time; especially when most of your friends are teachers or accountants. I’ve been able to build a camaraderie with some people who do what I do thanks to LInkedin. I like it so much more than Facebook!

      Terri,

Thanks for the excellent feedback, Terri! Glad to know that LinkedIn has worked for you. And as someone who does freelance as well, I can relate to the “loneliness” factor. Social media helps me find virtual co-workers.

If there are any particular groups you recommend for freelance writers, I’d love to hear.

    Hi Leora,

I joined LinkedIn two years ago, but never joined to any group. Now I thinking to update my profile and join. I think, now, that we have to use everything if we are looking for any kind of small success.

Your timing is perfect Leora. I’m so glad that you’ve decided to join us on the Bloggers Helping Bloggers group on LinkedIn.

LinkedIn is an extremely valuable platform for community building. I have cultivated several relationships there that have led to clients hiring me.

One of my clients (who I’ve been working with for over two years) wanted to incorporate her Blogger blog into her static HTML website. She had read an answer that I had posted and approached me about helping her. Another client who I met on Facebook connected with me on LinkedIn. She also has hired me and has since referred two other clients to me. Both of these clients are from Canada and I’m in the U.S. Without social media, none of us would have ever met.

I can’t wait to read your results and learn more about your LinkedIn experience Leora.

I’m on there and have really tried connecting with people but I find they aren’t social at all and I’ve only really made one connection. He appreciated my personal touch of sending him an email when we connected introducing myself and wanting to learn more about him.

I’ve joined a few groups but I guess I just haven’t chosen the right ones because they just spam it to death and I got tired of getting all the email updates of yet another one.

Will be anxious to read this post at the end of the month so thanks for sharing your expertise with us Leora.

      Adrienne,

Sounds like you should try Sherryl’s group, Bloggers Helping Bloggers. I just signed up, and everything I’ve read seems warm, friendly and helpful.

I am looking forward to pulling together both the survey results and more importantly the LinkedIn stories in one post. But that probably won’t be for another two weeks. I’ll try to get a post on a different topic up soon (maybe on plugins).

Leora, I can give you tons of wonderful LinkedIn stories, although few of them have to do with getting jobs.

One LinkedIn group that I belong to is mostly for jobhunters. It’s called Career Insider Network and it’s owned by a recruiter. This group has become something of a very tight support group. From this one group (which is actually not all that large) over the past two years members have:

    1. Formed such close friendships that they have been known to travel thousands of miles to visit each other in different countries.

    2. Taken up a collection (via paypal) and spontaneously paid the rent of a member in the Philippines. (No one asked anyone to do this. It was completely spontaneous.)

    3. When one of the members got a job in a faraway place, another member who lived in that city met her at the airport, put her up until she found an apartment, loaned her furniture and dishes until her own stuff arrived, and even helped her find a good used car.

    4. In South Carolina, one member’s husband contracted a very rare cancer and desperately needed a bone marrow transplant. The American members of the group immediately went out and got tested all over the country to see if they were a match.

    5. The computer of one member was damaged beyond repair about 18 months ago. It was during a time when he was up for a job that required computer use. Another member of the group purchased a computer for him as a gift and had it sent to his home in Florida. (He got the job, BTW, and is still using it daily.)

    6. A member in Detroit was hit by a car and required complete immobilization for nearly a month. He was going nuts during the day so members sent him their DVD collections. He got over 200 DVD’s, enough to keep him busy and occupied during his recovery. At the end of the month, he mailed back every DVD (I know because I sent him about 30 of them myself).

    7. A member in Thailand can buy tobacco dirt cheap. So whenever she has to travel to the United Kingdom, she brings a big pouch of very high grade tobacco for an elderly English member who loves to smoke it in his pipe but is out of work and has very little money. In return, this man sometimes sends a tin of special English ham to Thailand as a treat.

    8. On at least two occasions, different members of the group became so depressed over their joblessness that we worried that they were suicidal. A committee was formed and for as much as a week at a time, we scheduled a rotation making sure that someone was calling every half hour to check in and offer moral support. We did this until we felt that each person was out of danger.

This may not be the kind of stories you were looking for but they are true nonetheless. Nobody is saying that this is typical or that this is the purpose of LinkedIn. But sometimes support groups like this just happen and when they do it’s quite magical.

    Hi Leora –

I signed up for a LinkedIn account several months ago, and joined a few groups, but really haven’t taken much advantage of it for business purposes – yet. Mainly because I’m still in transition from my full-time job to a part-time one which will allow me more time to focus on my business. As I haven’t yet given notice at my full-time job, and I have some contacts on LinkedIn that are work-related, I’m keeping relatively quiet.

I do hope to get more involved in the next few months; I’ll try to keep tabs on your site to hear what you have to say about LinkedIn. I could use some advice on taking better advantage of what it has to offer!

The short answer is find groups that are active and not too big and are in your niche.

Thanks for leaving your comments on LinkedIn. I understand why you need to be quiet if you are still at your full-time job.

      Best wishes,

      Leora

I filled out the survey. I’ve been thinking a lot about Linkedin lately and how I haven’t really used it to my advantage. Either that or it’s quite useless. I’ve been a member for several years now, and I’ve added myself to some groups in my field. I have also participated in group discussions but: nothing.
