‘Contemporary artist Titus Kaphar makes oil-on-canvas copies of European and American portrait paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries and reconfigures them in strategic ways to create a dialogue about race, art and representation. His work is at once beautiful and halting as he dances between fictional narrative and history.’ (via Seattle Art Museum)

Marwan Rechmaoui is a Lebanese artist whose work often deals with themes of urban development and social history. His Beirut Caoutchouc is a large black rubber floor mat in the shape of Beirut’s current map. Embossed in precise detail with roads and byways and segmented into 60 individual pieces demarcating neighbourhoods, Rechmaoui’s installation scrutinises the physical and social formation of one of the world’s most conflicted cities. Through this piece, Rechmaoui highlights these divisions to question the underlying causes and consequences of cultural difference, affiliation, and identity, and explore how the city’s troubled history has both impacted and shaped the everyday lives of its inhabitants.

Born in Québec City in 1966, Stéphanie Béliveau was awarded a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a first prize in drawing and painting from Montréal’s Concordia University. Thanks to a FCAR scholarship, she was able to continue her studies in art at the Université du Québec à Montréal, obtaining a Master’s degree in 1993. While her first solo exhibition, Sur la terre battue, held at Galerie Clark in 1995, garnered a favourable response, Stéphanie Béliveau’s career really took off in 1996 with the presentation of her work in the Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts show Artifice 96, and in another solo exhibition, Peintures primaires, held at the Galerie Trois Points, which followed in the same year. That occasion brought her work exceptional critical attention and attracted the notice of the arts community, the public and a number of collectors. The following year she was the recipient of the Ville de Montréal’s Pierre-Ayot Award for young visual artists. (via Galerie Simon Blais)
