As empire builders and explorers circumnavigated the globe in the 18th and 19th centuries, they asserted their cultural authority by building monumental cathedrals and grand lyric theatres. So, from Bogota to Hanoi, the world is crammed with opulent opera houses, steeped in history and fascinating to visit.
