Assessing the Impact of Proposed Transit Investments and Public Policy Choices on Land Use Patterns (A Simulation Approach with UrbanSim)

October 29th, 2012 | Add a Comment

(Center Identification Number: 77931) Transit systems, such as commuter rail, light rail, bus rapid transit, and high speed rail, can generate significant impacts on land development patterns over time. As an aid to local decision-making, it would be very helpful to have an evaluation tool which can be developed, validated, and calibrated with local data to forecast the impacts of proposed transit investments on land use patterns and to assist in determining which policy choices might achieve a desired result. This study aims to develop an UrbanSim model to assess the changes that might result in a specific geographic area from a decision to construct a Bus Rapid Transit investment in Hillsborough County, Florida. UrbanSim has the potential to be a powerful tool in evaluating the benefits of transit investments because … Read entire article »

Evaluation of Camera-Based Systems to Reduce Transit Bus Side Collisions – Phase II

(Center Identification Number: 77940) The sideview camera system has been shown to eliminate blind zones by providing a view to the driver in real time. In order to provide the best integration of these systems, an integrated camera-mirror system (hybrid system) was developed and tested. Traditional aftermarket systems utilize wide-angle cameras, which provide up to 100-degree horizontal field of view. The developed camera system had 65-degree horizontal view, which was adequate to cover the side blind zones. The initial system was tested in a controlled driving test with 29 drivers. The drivers used the system to drive the bus and identify objects placed around the bus. Comparison was performed with the mirrors only vs. the hybrid … Read entire article »
