Douglas J. Bellows
Vice Director, Chief Operating Officer
Mr. “Doug” Bellows joined the professional team at the International Student Management Office (ISMO) as the Program Manager for the International Fellows Program at the National Defense University in October 2001. He has since become the Vice Director of the ISMO and his present duties also include administering over 125 senior military officers from countries around the world and traveling with them around the country showing them the American society, culture and institutions of this great country.
He completed a career of nearly 30 years of commissioned service in the Navy in which he was honored to serve his country and fellow servicemen. His career started after finishing his Masters degree at Michigan State University in 1971 because he was selected number eleven in the draft lottery. He earned his “Wings of Gold” as a Naval Aviator in 1972. He served with pride and pleasure in four Patrol Squadrons (VP) including OINC of VP-93 and Commanding Officer of VP-91. Unfortunately, all have been decommissioned as a result of the military downsizing. He was privileged to serve ashore as a NROTC instructor and staff member on a Reserve Patrol Wing. The Director of Naval Reserve selected him for two tours of duty as Division Director of two different divisions on his Pentagon staff. He had the good fortune to command Naval Air Reserve Norfolk while they won two consecutive Hammann Awards as the best Naval Air Reserve command. The perfect finish to a fun and exciting career was at the National Defense University where he was able to serve as the Reserve Liaison Officer and as Director of the Reserve Components National Security Course. Prior to becoming part of the ISMO staff, he embarked on a second career in retirement for a short period with the Navy as an Instructor with a Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps unit where he was awarded the area most innovative instructor award.
Captain Bellows is deeply indebted to all the dedicated men and women he had the pleasure to serve with over the years and who helped make his military career such a wonderful experience. He is especially appreciative of his wife and 3 children for all their untiring love and support.
