I may delete this thread, who knows if this is the right place to ask this but here goes....

I'm trying to learn how to play drums. I own a yamaha dd-20c and some sticks. In addition to that, I go to the local guitar center and practice on their real sets. The pad does have a bass drum but i just tap my feet in place of the bass drum. here's a pic.

so here's what i need help with. the album is called "miscellaneous debris" and the artist is primus. it's all covers. i really like this album, and it tends to be easier for me to learn stuff that i can get in to. and i can for this. but here's the thing, is it *such* a bad idea to start with this one? i mean, i asked some people and they said bad choice to start with......but could not give me a reason. can you?

i've already started with "intruder" btw, and i feel like i've mostly got it except for the congo sounding thing near the end

any tips/advice or discussion welcome

they were saying bad, as in bad to learn(that album).

but i can practice on real drums, which are not bad.

I dont know if primus is really the band to use to learn.

i played for 6/7 years. But I started in band and so learned all the rudiments (pick up a book on rudiments)

learning to play the drums to a band that plays their shit all weird (albeit awesome) is a feat and a half.

But seriously, instead of trying to copy things you hear, you will be able to hear things and recognize them. Which is good.

i mean, so that confirms my suspicion. that his drumming is very out of the norm. (and in my uneducated vantage point, very complex)

see i never had a "point of reference" to compare to. you ask me about guitar, and i can name some "normal" guitar styles and "not normal"

but drums kinda sounded all the same right now cuz i can't play them

took me a few minuets to fully digest that....hehe sneaky fucker.....

ok

i think i understand now, what i've been asking about all night. correct me if i'm wrong but what you are saying is.

-even IF i spent the time to learn how to MOCK or MIMIC those difficult beats on that album. it still would not help me become better. because i still wouldn't have the rudiments. which if i knew them, then i would have a starting point, then it might make that album easier to learn. and also, other albums, which are not similar to that one, easier to learn.

and because if i used mimicry alone, each and every song i would try to learn i would have to start from scratch.

maybe the situation, is something akin to....

someone who doesn't speak english.... learning a few select sentences that mean something specific(such as: Where is the bathroom).....but not learning about what the words themselves mean, or learning any other words.

so in conclusion,

the rudiments are actually little "mini-components" present in many many songs, but we just dont realize they are there? like, "basic building blocks" of sorts???

hmmmm... very interesting

I am a drummer and I learned to play by playing along to the Fugees album.

That, along with always learning new bands, is what kept me learning. Later on in my development (after 5 years or so) I went back and started learning rudiments. I was generally good at drums before that, but now I can incorporate more things into my playing thanks to studying rudiments. They were HARD to learn later in my development, but well worth it.

That's the gist of it, yes.
the rudiments are some of the pieces that make up a lot of music.

You can learn beats or certain songs and that's fun and it does help.
I found playing along with songs a lot more interesting than learning rudiments.
The first thing I ever learned was In Bloom by Nirvana.
I learned some Primus soon after that, too. (Pork Soda, Tales from the Punchbowl)

Their music is interesting and challenging since a good chunk of their songs are written in weird or alternating time signatures.

Same with Soundgarden . . . I played a lot of that too.
and I used to play along with Green Day Dookie as an endurance exercise :)
