The Stories Matter Project

In its present form, Stories Matter is intended to allow affiliates of the Life Stories of Montrealers Displaced by War, Genocide and Other Human Rights Violations CURA project to interact with the interviews in a way that emphasizes individual interviewees as central to stories being narrated. In addition to interacting with whole sessions, users will be able to create clips according to personal criteria, and then create personalized playlists of clips that speak to specific themes. A convenient search tool allows users to locate clips, sessions, interviews, and projects that speak to their particular interests. Finally, users can export the results of their work to PowerPoint or html for easy use in presentations.

In the long-term, however, Stories Matter will have a second phase wherein independent academics, teachers, and other interested communities will be able to download the software and apply it to their own collections, or interact with already clipped interviews posted by the Life Stories CURA project. The goal is to make Stories Matter an accessible tool for oral historians from all walks of life, and to provide people with an alternative to transcription that will ensure researchers continue interacting with and learning from the interviews they conduct once the interview is completed.
