MEMORANDUM – NOTICE OF 2012 STUDENT SENATE ELECTIONS

SUBJECT: Associated Students of NNMC 2012 Election (Student Senate)

Declare your candidacy to join the 2012-13 Student Senate!

Each spring semester, the Student Senate of NNMC holds campus-wide elections to nominate our student government officers and senators for the following school year beginning in August. Students who are running to join the 2012-13 Student Senate must declare your candidacy in April, in preparation for the May elections.

Note: A majority of the current student senators are graduating this spring. All positions are opening up. New student representatives are needed to step up and get involved!


Declare your candidacy for Student Senate! To run for a Student Senate position, students must declare their candidacy. Declaration of Candidacy forms are attached to this web page AND/OR available at the Student Senate office on the Española Campus (located at the student lounge in the Administration building).  Deadline for submitting Declaration of Candidacy forms is 5:00 pm April 25nd, 2012.


Please submit forms to Richard Sedillo (747-2287) for approval. Qualifications for joining Student Senate are listed below.

What does Student Senate do? Student Senate exists to advocate for student concerns and interests within our College, and to enhance student life through sponsored activities and events. As the official student government body at Northern, Student Senate has a major leadership role to play in bringing together students and making sure that the voice of students is heard in the operation and governance of the College. As part of fulfilling this mission, Student Senate is entrusted with an annual budget that it is authorized to spend in order to advance student interests.

Why should you join Student Senate? In short, joining Student Senate is one of the best opportunities available to Northern students to develop your leadership skills and help improve the resources and services available to all students. Student Senators have significant ability to make a positive impact, and participating in Student Senate is a great way to build up your professional experience and resume in preparation for post-college employment. Students who are interested in declaring for candidacy must realize that as a Student Senate member you are required to participate in Senate sponsored activities.


Qualifications for joining Student Senate:

______Must have completed 6 credit hours at Northern.

______Must register for the Fall 2012 semester with 6 credit hours or more.

______Must have a 2.5 GPA or better.

______Must obtain twenty-five (25) signatures from students with a valid Northern ID OR present two (2) letters of recommendation.

______Must write a 1 page cover letter declaring your CANDIDACY.

___________Indicate officer position you are interested in.

Elections will be held on May 2nd and 3rd, 2012 from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm on the Espanola campus.  The first Student Senate meeting after the election is scheduled for May 4th, 2012, at 4 pm in the Boardroom.
