These battles have been raging on for many years and I'm old enough to know that I was taught the old math. For me, old math meant no technology or math manipulatives. Back then, calculators were adding machines and only the business classes used those. Math for me was computations with a few word problems thrown in for good measure. I didn't have access to math manipulatives and had a math textbook for each grade.  As time went on, I did, however, embrace manipulatives and strove to teach for understanding....Read Full Post

    31 Jan 2013 | 8:05 am
I have built another little digital humanities project based on the text of the 62 stories in Grimm's Fairy Tales. This one is called Grimm's Story Metrics and presents an interactive matrix of stories together with various metrics calculated from their text. You can click on a column to sort by that data, click again to reverse the direction, and click on a story name to open it in another window. The image below shows the stories sorted by the 'Royalty' metric which indicates, as you would expect, how many references there are to words related to the topic of royalty. Click on the image to…

A pastor, a doctor, and a mathematician were stuck behind a slow foursome while playing golf. The greenskeeper noticed their frustration and explained to them, “The slow group ahead of you is a bunch of blind firemen. They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a fire last year, so we always let them play for free.” The pastor responded, “That’s terrible! I’ll say a prayer for them.” The doctor said, “I’ll contact my ophthalmologist friends and see if there isn’t something that can be done for them.” And the mathematician asked, “Why can’t these guys play at…

Then it runs as it should, but after 12:04:15 it resets back to 12:00:00. It counts up to 12:04:15 again and then it jumps to ... 12:08:32 ! Weird stuff. Do you know what's wrong with my alarm clock? Update (12/02/2013) Solution posted by Saumya Gupta, Abhimanyu Dhamija (CSE IITB 2011 Alumnus, Citibank Analyst) and Naga Vamsi Krishna in comments!

Professor Dave Richeson is one of the most exuberant math people I've gotten to know but I didn't know how exuberant he was until I interviewed him. He's also involved in a bunch of neat projects. It was one of these projects, documented in Dave Richeson's blog article, How I teach topology: an inquiry-based learning approach, that caught my attention since I have a real passion for collaborative learning. About Dave Richeson Dave Richeson is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Dickinson College. He graduated from Hamilton College in 1993 with a degree in mathematics and received a Ph.D.
